What is the shuttle, then? A rocket mounted to an orbiter? The Apollo capsules could travel further, more frequently, safer, and most importantly for much less money than the shuttle. The shuttle is meant to be a heavy lifter and a mobile science lab, but now we have the ISS for the experiments. Heavy lifting can be done by other means that don't require a maintenance bill of $4 billion per year.

Orion sure seems like a step backward, as NASA regresses to the days of the Apollo capsule that requires being mounted on a large rocket to get into space. This is what many billions of dollars gets us??? Are they going to be gluing heat-proof tiles on this one also?
