Coral reefs themselves were a major factor in dampening global warming since they fix dissolved CO2 into calcium carbonate as they grow. Their death will accelerate atmospheric warming. The loss of reefs around the world will likely have as large or larger an impact than deforestation or so many other man-made environmental calamities.

I SCUBA dove in some of these waters between seven to twelve years ago and I must say that arrogant and ignorant divers are responsible for a lot of damage, too. I have seen dangling equipment tear up fragile coral and sponges by people who have no clue as to what they are doing. Most don’t even care, either. They are greatly incensed if someone tries to correct them, too.
