@Lizz: It's not about fleeing from a doomed planet. It's about exploration, human curiousity, new horizons. There is plenty we can do for ourselves, here and now, that doesn't involve anything so difficult and drastic as finding a new planet to live on. You're criticizing one thing as if it were at the expense of another, when it obviously isn't (as Paul pointed out).

And lumping the amount of money spent on space exploration with defence is silly. The amount spent on defence DWARFS space exploration. You can't compare them, let alone equate them.

My first reaction to this is not again. We've given up so many chances in regards to space exploration already. I can understand Lizz's point, but the problem is that Earth is doomed already.

And the money you're spending to pay for internet access could be better spent providing medicine to those without it, or for water for those without, or any other number of prescriptions to fix human misery.

Considering the budget for NASA is in the neighbourhood of $20 to $30 Billion, and the budget for the US dept of defense is upwards of $525 Billion, you can't even compare the two. Maybe you should continue to stick you fingers into your ears, screaming "la de da da", and continue to ignore your obvious hypocrisy.

We wouldn't have to worry about finding other celestial bodies to live on if we would learn to live simply and in harmony with Nature, instead of using up the Earth's resources as if they are infinite.

The ridiculous amount of money that is spent on Defense and space exploration is needed for the people on this planet to live.

If the Obama administration turns its back on Human Spaceflight, it will be a dark day for America. Our country has a rich history and tradition in human endeavours in space. If they scrap the program it will be like what Portugal did in the age of discovery. Look where that country is now...
