This is very, very far from a natural language grammar.
This is, at best, a type-2 formal grammar:

Any skills needed for this type of matching may be viewed as arithmetic in nature, not linguistic.

Hah, cool. It’s extremely interesting to see just how similiar monkeys and apes are to us. I wonder, would it be possible to hook up something like a text-to-speech synthesiser to a bonobo’s brain?
