we had a blast! woke up at 4 am and laid on blankets till dawn...my 6 yr old stopped counting at 28. Pretty good considering they put a Waldemart right about 9 miles away right in the direction we were facing.

If your son is young, watch after 9pm. Little kids cannot stay awake for the usual increase in activity just after midnight. If you are all morning people and your son can get up before dawn, you can try watching at least an hour before sunrise, but 2 hours before would be better.

It's a bit harder for very young children to have the patience it takes looking up so make the night out fun rather than just focusing on the shower. A back yard camp out for example can make it a fun event.

The good thing about watching after 9pm is that you see "Earth grazers" then. Those are the meteors that span the whole sky, which again, is easier for younger children to spot.
