		<description>I once saw the claim that the Appalachians were once 40k tall.  I wonder if this study will cast doubt on that.  I think the Appalachians were mountain building at roughly the same time as the inland sea over the present Mississippi river; so surely there was no dearth of ice and snow then.  I&#039;m not sure how they inferred 40k; but if it&#039;s true, it would seem to really prove how hot it was--we&#039;re lucky we&#039;re alive!</description>
