Although the solar-powered cars are equipped with batteries to insure a steady flow of energy, the battery technology doesn't yet allow them to drive at night, or through a long spell of overcast weather.

With those limitations in mind, the organizers linked the solar-powered car race to another competition called the Eco Challenge, in which hybrid and electric cars follow the same race course through the outback. Competitors in the second race are more conventional, mass-market cars that come from such automakers as Tesla, Honda, and BMW's Mini division.
