Well Arlo, no matter how many million years of evolution separates humans from rats, we didnt evolve to eat that stuff either.

We have only been eating that way for a tiny amount of human history ourselves, despite what throwing the milions of years around may seem to indicate. Some groups of humans have only been eating that way for a couple hundred years. Less than the rats in some cases.

So, I dont think that rats are a bad study subject in this case, and I hope the research ends up being helpful to those who compulsively overeat. I know too many people who struggle with weight who fail time and time again with conventional dieting. I would love to see a greater understanding of how to treat the problem so that they may succeed in what they sincerely wish, to lose weight.

So, I probably shouldn't be eating junk food or my junk food eating rats. I can't have any fun!

Congratulations, we've proven that rats overeat when we feed them food they never evolved to eat.

Human beings, separated from rats by about 75 million years of evolution, on the other hand, find satiation in eating protein and fat, while sugar causes insulin swings and cravings.

Yet another study in rodents warped to make fat seem bad. Unless it's trans or poly-6, it's not.

Yes, food is addictive. Ding-dong anyone home?

There’s an interesting post over at the Health Journal Club that makes the case that people should just not eat anything that wasn’t a food 100 years ago. Gets rid of the aspartame, bleached GM flour, high fructose corn syrup garbage they try to pass off as food these days. If interested you can read on it here,

Soooo, was high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) involved? Don't about a third of all calories we humans consume come from junk food. Shame on the food industry for tricking the brain into an addiction. -- a perfect crime. It took law suits to get cigarette companies to clean up their act--hopefully this study will provide meaningful support for real change in our food production to do the same.
