Jeff, you're hilarious.

You're probably one of those freaks who are so deluded you actually believe that humans have not done enough harm to the world and its animals and could afford to do more.

And no, nowhere in your post did you prove that the figures or the analysis are inaccurate.

You obviously flunked your maths, on top of science.

Which part of 1% or "even if Wallace’s numbers—which he calls conservative estimates— turn out to be a little exaggerated, it still means that the totals for turtles killed are far greater than the previous studies he looked at would suggest. Some further study of small fishing operations could help figure out how close the study’s extrapolations are, but in the meantime, sea turtles need all the help they can get."
....Do you not get?

What a retard.

This is not science. This is someone with an agenda to promote, guessing about something for which he has little or no data. To take this as fact is doing a disservice to science and mankind.

Sure turtles are killed needlessly, and TEDs are an acceptable way to prevent or greatly reduce turtle deaths. But by believing everything that a 'conservation' group puts out as the truth is just being gullible.

More on this - not trying to a downer, but I think this is just continued natural human nature and we see it with animal populations (we are really no different)....without balance, we will just eat and outstrip and modify and kill everything for our own benefit. Enlightened folks and governements will pay some money and give some time to help out, but most people do not care, or want to take the time, or are ignorant on the subjects and do nothing. We have already greatly altered the landscape and have driven many species to extinction or packed into isolated preserves, and I feel we will continue to do this. I see a world with billions of more people consuming a narrow range of selected and altered food sources with small and isolated patches of parks and open space. It really does take absolute catastrophy for people and governments (en mass) to make changes. It's perhaps a natural laziness? Catch every last fish in the Med sea and then, once it's gone, spend time and money to restock and protect. Cut down all the trees, then realize their importance and plant new ones....this is sort of our pattern. What is so frustrating is that we have the ability to live, create a balance with all of nature, but too many human emotions get in the way, mostly greed and the desire for power and to control - which are biological - an alpha person, or group that controls an area, or a clan. Fighting for territory and resources..outstripping them and having to migrate. It's not until that there is no new space to go into or no new resources to extract that we will start making changes.

Well the fisherman should think about their meal ticket then - the ocean and its life - as a whole network that supports them in what they do. In order to keep getting good catches and making money they should take the time and effort to keep everything in balance and respect how all the creatures contribute to a healthy system. This is same with the never ending obsession with fossil fuels. Nobody wants to spend the time and money to make the shifts....changes come slow and painful. But as long as they come...
