So we might get the 50's version of the future yet? or better yet, the version of 2015 featured in Back to the Future 2?

I thought that the essential problem with the flying car were that they were heavily compromised designs? You get a pretty crummy plane, and also a pretty crummy car.

For instance, in car mode, where do you put the wings? These are big structures yet on the ground they are completely useless. Same goes for the tailfin and rudder.

Of course if someone comes up with a practical solution that would be really neat!

If it were me id take the chassis for a large light 4x4 and stick on 9 super powerful self contained propellers under it(redundancy issues as well) and see what lift they got out of it. Im pretty sure they can be rigid and still propel the vehicle in any direction, forward or back just by adjusting the thrust output to the front, back or sides. A simple computer can do the program and be linked to a simple joystick for the driver.
To provide stability the vehicle would need 8 more smaller motors placed at 45 degrees, 1 each in all corners. These would stop roll and even in a terrible storm allow the stability to return the vehicle to its normal orientation.

Im pretty sure this design would work, though i must say im not to hot on the thrust capabilities of self contained "fans". The air would be sucked from above the vehicle through funnels in the doors.

Right there you go, theres your design.. now you go and build it, cause i dont have a million dollar lab!
