Betamax and VHS each had pluses and minuses.
Betamax had superior picture quality, but a higher price.
VHS had a lower price, but lower picture quality.

VHS outsold Betamax because the consumer decider that he/she preferred VHS’s lower price over Betamax’s better picture quality.
