Nick,

Thanks for the link. I'll be very interested to see the two different approaches develop—especially whether the brain implant version really could become sufficiently more sophisticated to merit invasive surgery. DARPA has targets like a system that lasts for 70 years to avoid repeat surgery, but I'll believe that one when I see it.

This is so incredibly behind the times.

European scientists already have a hand that connects to the nerves in a patients stump and communicates with the brains through said nerves, no brain implant required. It takes advantage of phantom limb syndrome. Pressure sensors in the hand give feedback to the brain. The patient can *feel* with this thing.

Here's a video in case you think I'm full of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X85Lpuczy3E

Granted it's not as ambitious as the full arm above, but OTOH it doesn't required complex, unnecessary brain surgery, either.

Very interesting topic and I'm looking forward to see in a near by future how people who suffered accidents can recover completely even with prosthetic arms or legs. Technology is moving so fast that it marvels me each passing day. Hopefully long standing traditions like acupuncture stay hand in hand with medicine.
