I'm surprised that Paul Davies also didn't mention his earlier assertion that only quantum physics could account for the introduction of variations into the early universe. If this is accurate, it would seem that these could also account for the temperature variations observed. Any thoughts on this?

Numbers are the Supreme Court of science. However Godel proved that we may not prove everything using numbers. Physics needs numbers. There must be Physics Foibles. Always more to prove.

Agreed! It won't be science if scientists just believe in the here-say. However, scientists should take a serious look at these age old knowledge system and prove its assertions through modern scientific methods. After all, none of these assertions have been ever proven wrong!

I find it fascinating that the conclusions that were arrived at >5000 years ago are being arrived at now using modern day science. Maybe there are multiple paths to revealing scientific truth!

Thank you Anupam! Science has trouble with religion, and can't accept that someone might actually have known before "science" said it was so.

I believe the circles actually prove something else. Radial polarization is in strong evidence here, which give rise to color perception. Different wavelengths of light are bent by gravity in varying degrees of diffraction, which would place photons further or closer to the next region of gravitational shift, so it would be impossible for them to coincide. I've not kept up with radial polarization studies in awhile, I am only suggesting an alternative explanation.

This is a case of Science catching up to the Vedic philosophy of an ageless Universe with cycles of formation and destruction.

Still, science has a lot of catching up to do like, such as the concepts of Rebirth, Karma, Samskar, Agnihotr etc, that is, everything mentioned in the Vedas – the oldest body of knowledge that mankind has!

Exactly. Stargate Universe! http://www.syfy.com/universe/.
The ship Destiny is searching for the meaning of the pattern in cosmic microwave background.

You know, it could be from colliding branes. And it could even be a message from the civilization in the other brane ! (Speculating is so cheap!)

Chris, that's exactly what I was thinking. Also, a recent Futurama from this year dabbled in the recurring universe thinking.

Sadly, these only make me more skeptical of this latest bit of science news. If Motl, and other critics are right, looks like we may be getting excited over an artifact. Oh well...
