I just heard Sydney Cameron on the Thom Hartmann program today. In the section of the bee population that she's studying, and the extent of her investigation so far, she couldn't give any conclusion about the cause of the decline in these species. Hartmann talked to a different group right after, for a perspective on the entire bee population decline.

I find it curious that there isn't a single mention of pesticides killing and weakening these gorgeous insects. Beekeepers and scientists (who aren't sponsored by Monsanto) say that's the number one cause of decline.

@ Douglas and Amos. Unfortunately, these things need to be written at the intuitive level of a one year old. People, in general, are too dumb to reflect upon how something as insignificant as a bee could be vital to the survival of the human species. I once heard someone, when they were explained to that the decline of bees means fewer pollinators of fruits and vegetables, remark that "Gee, then I guess we'll jut have to eat more hamburger".

@Douglas: Really? I think most of the Guardian's science coverage is pretty good. They seem to be the best of the British newspapers.

I love how all the science articles in the Guardian are written at the intuitive level of a one year old.

Bees are important because they pollinate the food we eat. And without food we die. Nap time.
