I am almost 70. “Hone in on” was used regularly in my youth and I’ve been surprised to see it replaced by “home in on” more recently. Here is a Merriam-Webster citation for it:

Actually ‘Hone’ is acceptable. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/hone – Phrasal Verb:
hone in
1. To move or advance toward a target or goal: The missiles honed in on the military installation.

the phrase is ‘home in on.”

you hone an edge/knife/chisel/point/etc., you home in on a target.
