Puppetmistress -

So the first known cases were due to the abysmal living conditions of middle-class Italian women? The only "conditions" TB needs are two people in the same place. Drug resistance, as the article points out, comes mainly from sloppy use of existing drugs.

Very scary indeed, but there is certainly hope. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking off the top of my head that both bacteriophage therapies and our rapidly increasing understanding and control of molecular and genetic based approaches are promising areas of relevant research.

If only we didn't have an electorate so largely illiterate and ignorant of basic science!

I can't help but think that the abysmal living conditions in India, and the caste system that keeps many people in them, has a lot to do with the developement of this new strain.

Worse than a setback, we don't have anything new in the arsenal and even if we did, somebody would use it incorrectly and create a new strain of resistant bacteria. It's going to spread folks. Slowly but surely the bacteria are winning the war. Keep on unnecessarily using your anti-bacterial soap, it can't hurt anything. Can it?

Wow...Maybe with genetic engineering there's a chance we can create bio-drugs, I think we should seriously consider funding research for it.....As opposed to military spending....

For one of the diseases we'd hope to eventually eradicate, this is a depressing setback.
