I understand the infected cow was destined to be rendered for pet food. Why has no one expressed concern that their beloved cats and dogs might become infected by such a practice?

What do we have to do to change our laws so that beef producers are allowed to test their own cattle, and so that high-risk products like bone meal, poultry feed and meat from downer cattle do not find their way into the food supply of any species?

What this article is neglecting is that the FDA testing protocol for Mad Cow in the U.S. is at less than 1% of cows slaughtered, so statistically if one is found there very likely numerous others that aren't found (in contrast with our trading partners in Japan, Europe, and elsewhere who test far more cows).

Furthermore, even if adult cows are not fed cow-based products, calfs are still raised on artificial milk made from ground bone meal from cows, creating another possible source of contamination, which, as everyone knows, might take years to express.

Stay informed!

I am reminded of why America *should* worry about 'mad cow disease' each time I check to see if I, as an immigrant from the UK, have become eligible to donate blood. So far no go.

If you were to do some research, maybe there could be a test. Until then, you're out donations of my prime O negative.
