Not ALL federally funded research, just those funded by the UKRC grants. According to this 2005 article, a third of all public research spending comes from the Ministry of Defence, not these 7 Councils. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/jan/20/highereducation.science Any current figures?
