The Debate Continues: Another Skull Study Supports the “Hobbit”


hobbit skull Anthropologists have conducted a new analysis of skulls from the so-called “hobbit” fossils found in an Indonesian cave in 2003, and say their results add more evidence that the fossils come from a hitherto unknown race of tiny people. The researchers compared the hobbit skulls to those of modern humans and apes, as well as the fossil brain cases of early human ancestors. “The shape of the skull is consistent with what we would expect for a small archaic Homo,” said Karen Baab [National Geographic News], lead author of the new study.

When paleontologists unearthed a cluster of strange, hominid skeletons on the island of Flores, they had little idea that they were about to start a fierce debate that would divide the field of anthropology. But soon the researchers declared that the 18,000-year-old fossils came from people who were only three feet tall, and who were actually a different species of hominid, which researchers called Homo floresiensis. “These hobbits – hominids – appear to have survived when modern humans were all over the Earth at this time,” Baab said [The Guardian]. Since then, debate has raged over whether the hobbits were indeed an unknown species, or whether the individuals found in the cave were just modern humans with a disease that stunted their growth and gave them small brains, a condition called microcephaly.

On the Galapagos Islands, an Evolutionary Puzzle That Darwin Missed


pink iguanaOn the slopes of the Wolf volcano at the northern tip of one of the Galapagos Islands prowls a pink iguana, which until recently had entirely escaped the notice of the island’s visitors–including the eagle-eyed Charles Darwin. But now researchers have spotted the rosy reptile and declared it a new species, which diverged from the Galapagos’s other land iguana species about 5.7 million years ago. Says lead researcher Gabriele Gentile: “What’s surprising is that a new species of megafauna, like a large lizard, may still be [found] in a well-studied archipelago” [National Geographic News].

The creature was first noticed by park rangers on the island of Isabela in 1986, but researchers only began to study the animal in the last few years. A genetic analysis revealed that the pink iguana was quite distinct from the two known land iguana species, but the date of their genetic divergence poses a puzzle. “At 5.7 million years ago, all of the western islands of the archipelago did not exist,” said Gabriele Gentile…. “That’s a conundrum, because it’s now only inhabiting one part of Isabela that formed less than half a million years ago” [BBC News]. In fact, even the oldest parts of the current archipelago may be less than five million years old, researchers say. One possible explanation is that volcanoes that are now underwater may have been above the waves millions of years ago, allowing some marine iguanas to clamber onto those shores and begin evolving.

A Clue to the Evolutionary Riddle of How the Turtle Got Its Shell


prehistoric turtlesThree prehistoric turtle fossils dating from 220 million years ago have provided new evidence to fuel the debate over how the turtle‘s remarkable shell evolved. The fossils, which were found in southwestern China, show turtles with fully developed shells on their bellies, but nothing above on their backs. Says researcher Xiao-chun Wu: “Since the 1800s, there have been many hypotheses about the origin of the turtle shell. Now we have these fossils of the earliest known turtle. They support the theory that the shell would have formed from below as extensions of the backbone and ribs, rather than as bony plates from the skin as others have theorised” [Telegraph].

Researchers write in their paper in Nature [subscription required] that they named the new species Odontochelys semistestacea, which means toothed, half-shelled turtle. Wu and his coauthor Chun Li say the fossils support the theory that the lower shell, called the plastron, evolved first, and that the upper shell, called the carapace, formed later. This process corresponds with the shell formation seen in turtle embryos and hatchlings [Telegraph].

The new research contradicts the other main theory regarding the evolution of the turtle shell, which holds that the shell evolved from bony plates on the skin that broadened and fused together to form the turtle’s armor. The entire structure would then fuse to the underlying ribs and backbone. (Modern reptiles, such as crocodiles, have these bony plates, as did some dinosaurs, such as ankylosaurs.) The newly studied Odontochelys specimens, however, showed no signs of bony skin plates [LiveScience].

Curiosities of the Deep Revealed in First Census of Sea Life


deep sea octopusUsing boat, tags, nets, and submarines, marine biologists from 82 nations have been canvassing the oceans for the first Census of Marine Life, an ambitious effort to get a rough tally of all the creatures in the world’s oceans. The 10-year project is expected to conclude in 2010, and researchers say the broad survey will help them observe changes to marine ecosystems. Says co-senior scientist Ron O’Dor: “We are moving into this period of global warming, which is resulting in the acidification of the oceans, melting of the polar ice cap. We can use the first census as a benchmark to see what happens in the oceans over the next decade or more” [BBC News].

Although the project still has two years to go, researchers have already made a host of startling discoveries, many of which will be discussed this week at the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity in Valencia, Spain. In one study, researchers conducted a genetic analysis of deep sea octopuses from around the world, and determined that most descended from a common ancestor species that still lives near Antarctica. Researchers believe that octopuses started migrating to new ocean basins more than 30 million years ago when, as Antarctica cooled and a large icesheet grew, nature created a “thermohaline expressway,” a northbound flow of tasty frigid water with high salt and oxygen content. Isolated in new habitat conditions, many different species evolved; some octopuses, for example, losing their defensive ink sacs — pointless at perpetually dark depths [LiveScience].

Deep in the Jungle, A Fungus Pumps Out Diesel From Wood

fungusA newly discovered tree fungus could be on its way to the gas station. The fungus, Gliocladium roseum, is able to turn plant matter into gaseous hydrocarbons that are almost chemically identical to diesel fuel. “This is the only organism that has ever been shown to produce such an important combination of fuel substances,” said researcher Gary Strobel from Montana State University. “The fungus can even make these diesel compounds from cellulose, which would make it a better source of biofuel than anything we use at the moment” [LiveScience].

The fungus grows inside trees in the rainforests of Patagonia, in the southern part of Argentina and Chile. After discovering the new fungus wedged between cells in a stem from an Ulmo tree (Eucryphia cordifolia), Strobel and colleagues cultured the organism, collected the gaseous compounds it produced, and ran the compounds through a mass spectrometer to identify them. When he saw the printout, Strobel says, “every hair on my body stood up.” The list included octane, 1-octene, heptane, 2-methyl, and hexadecane–all common components of diesel fuels [ScienceNOW]. The gaseous compound, dubbed “myco-diesel,” is thought to be used by G. roseum to poison other fungi.

Bats Are Dying From White Nose Mold, But Researchers Don’t Know Why


bat white nose fungusResearchers have gathered some clues to solve the mystery of what’s killing off hibernating bats throughout New England, but say they’re still far from knowing how to halt the strange die-off. In a new study, researchers identified the characteristic white fungus that has been found on the noses of dead and dying bats, and say it’s a new species of mold that thrives at low temperatures like those found in caves in the winter. But debate still continues over whether the fungus is the cause of death, or simply a secondary infection that takes advantage of bats with already weakened immune systems.

Bats covered with the fungus, a sickness now called white-nose syndrome, were first spotted in Howes Cave near Albany, N.Y., during the winter of 2006. At that time, field biologists reported caves that were typically covered with hibernating bats had loads of vacancies…. In one case, a cave floor was littered with dead bats [LiveScience]. Since then, the epidemic has spread throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont, with 80 to 100 percent of bats dying in some caves.

“Bizarre” and Fluffy Dino May Have Used Feathers to Attract Mates


feathered dinosaurResearchers have found a “bizarre” feathered dinosaur with a hodgepodge of characteristics, including four long tail feathers that researchers say may have evolved for display purposes–perhaps to attract a mate or scare off a rival. The well-preserved fossil of the new species, named Epidexipteryx hui, shows that the beast was covered in short, fluffy feathers but lacked the “contour feathers” that help modern birds fly; researchers say Epidexipteryx must have been flightless.

Paleontologist expert Angela Milner commented that the find “shows that feathers were likely being used for ornamentation for many millions of years before they were modified for flight. It provides fascinating evidence of evolutionary experiments with feathers that were going on before small dinosaurs finally took to the air and became birds” [BBC News].

Deep in a Goldmine, an Ecosystem of One


solo bacteriaAlmost two miles beneath the earth’s surface in a South African goldmine, researchers have found a new species of bacteria that lives in total isolation from any other organism. The discovery offers the first known example of an ecosystem that isn’t a complex web of different life forms, but is instead hosts just one self-sufficient species. The bacteria, Desulforudis audaxviator, is able to extract all its food and energy directly from the surrounding water and rocks, and researchers say the independent microbe offers a glimpse of the shape life could take on other planets.

Researchers wanted to know what organisms were living in the mine’s deep fissures, a habitat completely devoid of light and oxygen, so they analyzed the genes present in a water sample to determine what species lived there. They filtered a total of 5,600 liters of mine water to get their sample, which gave other microbes plenty of opportunities to make themselves known. Of the DNA sequences obtained from this sample, over 99.9 percent were from this single species; over half of the remainder were obvious contaminants from their own lab [Ars Technica].

Carnivorous Dinosaur With Bird-Like Lungs Discovered


dinosaur bird lungsA 33-foot long, carnivorous dinosaur that lived 85 million years ago had a breathing system similar to that used by modern birds, and researchers say the finding is further evidence of the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds. A fossil found in a riverbank in Argentina shows evidence of efficient air sacs that pumped air into the dinosaur’s lungs.

Lead researcher Paul Sereno named the new dinosaur Aerosteon riocoloradensis, which means “air bones from the Rio Colorado.” Instead of lungs that expand and contract, Sereno thinks this beast had air sacs that worked like a bellows, blowing air into the beast’s stiff lungs, much like modern birds…. Most paleontologists believe birds evolved from small, feathered meat-eating dinosaurs, and the earliest known birds were strikingly similar to these dinosaurs [Reuters].

Ancient Australian Reef May Hold Fossils of Earliest Animal Life


Flinders RangeIn the middle of the Australian outback along a mountain chain called the Flinders Ranges, researchers have discovered a 650 million year old reef that was once underwater. Researchers say the tiny fossils they’ve already found in the ancient reef may be the earliest examples of multicellular organisms ever found, and may answer questions about how animal life evolved.

Researcher Malcolm Wallace explains that the oldest-known animal fossils are 570 million years old. The reef in the Flinders Ranges is 80 million years older than that and was, he said, “the right age to capture the precursors to animals” [The Times]. The first fossils discovered in the reef appear to be sponge-like multicellular organisms that resemble tiny cauliflowers, measuring less than an inch in diameter, but Wallace cautions that the creatures haven’t been thoroughly studied yet. The reef’s discovery was announced at a meeting of the Geological Society of Australia this week.

Bizarre “Ant From Mars” Offers Clues to Insect Evolution


eyeless antA newly discovered ant from the Amazon rainforest is so strange that researchers have named it “the ant from Mars.” Found in Brazil, the ant has a pale body and no eyes, says [lead researcher] Christian Rabeling…. Its mouthparts stick out like sharp forceps and are longer than the rest of its head. Its DNA may be even more interesting. Genetic analysis puts the new ant so far from other species that it deserves its own subfamily [Science News].

Researchers named the subterranean ant Martialis heureka, which translates to “eureka ant from Mars,” because of the new species‘ odd morphology and because of their own excitement over finding it. Researchers say that a DNA analysis suggests that the M. heureka evolved earlier than any other living ant, and that it has changed little over 50 million years. “This discovery lends support to the idea that blind, subterranean predator ants arose at the dawn of ant evolution,” Rabeling said [LiveScience].

Who Ruled the Triassic Food Chain? A Crocamander (or Is It “Frogodile”?)


Antarctica crocamanderAbout 240 million years ago, a 15-foot amphibian with a nasty bite ruled the Antarctic plains, say paleontologists who have described the creature for the first time. Fossils show that the predator, newly named Kryostega collinsoni, had an extra set of teeth protruding from the roof of its mouth, which helped it shred flesh and hold struggling prey still in its mouth.

The animal, which researchers called Antarctica’s top predator in the Triassic Period, resembled a modern crocodile but was actually a temnospondyl, a prehistoric amphibian that was an early relative of salamanders and frogs. Because of their odd mixture of characteristics, members of this group are sometimes nicknamed “crocamanders” or “frogodiles” [Discovery News]. The new species will be described in the forthcoming issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

Arsenic-Eating Bacteria May Resemble Early Life on Primordial Earth


Mono Lake hot spring bacteriaIn a salty hot spring near Mono Lake, California, researchers have found two new species of bacteria that use arsenic for photosynthesis, and require no oxygen to fuel the process. Researchers say the bacteria may be similar to those that existed on primordial Earth where oxygen was scarce, and may illustrate an important stage of how early life developed in mineral-rich waters over 2 billion years ago.

Arsenic is well-known for its toxicity; it was used so often as tool for homicide in the 1800s that it earned the nickname “king of poisons” [The Scientist]. Yet the newly discovered bacteria can not only tolerate the element, they require it to survive. One of the first steps most organisms perform in photosynthesis is to split water molecules, creating oxygen. Oxygen donates energy in the form of electrons to other molecules, setting off a chain reaction that eventually results in the building of sugars for the organism’s own food. For the red and green bacteria found in Mono Lake, arsenic plays the role of oxygen [Science News].

World’s Smallest Snake May Be the Smallest That Could Ever Exist

smallest snakeResearchers say they have found the world’s smallest snake on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Evolutionary biologist Blair Hedges says that the tiny reptile, which can comfortably curl up on a quarter and which is barely as wide as a spaghetti noodle, may also be at the evolutionary limit for the smallest size possible for snakes.

Most snakes produce clusters of eggs, but the newly discovered species lays only one egg, which hatches a youngster who is one-half the length of the adult. That would be like humans giving birth to a 60-pound (27kg) baby. Dr Hedges added that the snake’s size might limit the size of its clutch. “If a tiny snake were to have more than one offspring, each egg would have to share the same space occupied by the one egg and so the two hatchlings would be half the normal size.” The hatchlings might then be too small to find anything small enough to eat [BBC News].

Prehistoric Creature Moved from Sea to Land, but Went Extinct Anyway

water land animal tetrapodAround 365 million years ago, a fishy, finned creature that resembled a small alligator clambered up on a sandbank and earned its place in evolutionary history. Researchers who recently discovered fossils of the animal, named Ventastega curonica, say it’s the most primitive four-legged creature ever found. While it wasn’t the first “fishapod” to lurch out of the water (that honor goes to the Tiktaalik, which accomplished the feat about 375 million years ago), its more primitive evolutionary stage gives researchers new information about the earliest four-legged creatures, or tetrapods.

Ventastega was first described from a few bone fragments unearthed in Latvia in 1994, but it took additional years of excavation and the discovery of remains from many more individuals before scientists had a good idea of what the creature looked like. The latest portrait to emerge, from an especially well-preserved find, reveals an animal with a part-fish, part-tetrapod skull and a full-fledged tetrapod body. It would have spent the majority of its time on water and been clumsy on land [National Geographic News].
