I’m doing a BBC radio interview about ID

submit to reddit

I am too busy right now to do a full-on blog entry, so instead I’ll let everyone know that I will be doing a radio interview tonight (August 8, 2005) at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time on BBC 5 about creationism, ID, and President Bush; fallout from my blog entry about this. PZ Myers of Pharyngula will be on as well. If you want to listen, they have a streaming link.

Note added August 9, 2005: The interview is now online at at the BBC 5 website. My interview starts about 1 hour 11 minutes into the show. PZ Myers’ interview starts about 1 hour 5 minutes in.

Maybe its time for a BA Podcast?

  2. 2.   Outside observer Says:

What a wonderfull opportunity to spread the word on FSM!!!

  3. 3.   Ian Musgrave Says:

What the heck is 6.00 pm Eastern time in UT for us non-US types who want to listen in? Will it be archived? We are about to have a Creationist flare up here in Oz and I’m gathering resources to help inform people (and I would REALLY like to hear Phil and PZ live talking up the flying Spagetti Monster).

  4. 4.   RomRod Says:

so you are gonna tell the BBC that the best evidence that ID theory is flawed is Mr. Bush himself? hehe just kidding… good luck… btw 6 pm EST is 22:00 UT (hey Ian is with you).

  5. 5.   PZ Myers Says:

Are we on the same program? I was told 9PM EST.

  6. 6.   Matt Sims Says:

BBC Radio5? (you can listen live online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive)
    6pm est = 11pm gmt i think
That would make it midway on the Anita Anand show?

  7. 7.   Chet Twarog Says:

    Ian,
1800 hours (6 pm) EDT is 2200 (10 pm) hours UTC.

As I have tried to point out numerous times, most people do not have a scientific “mind” — they are quite stuck in magical thinking indefinitely.
Please, Phil, don’t say “it is Crap!”
What is at risk (am I alarmist?) is our stable, progressive, technically capable civilization which has only been around for @ 300 years and civilization @ 5,000 years. If it collapses, it will be the religious (Hebrew, Catholic, Christian, and Islamic) fundamentalist extremists that will take it “down” with no recovery.

  8. 8.   The Bad Astronomer Says:

PZ, yeah, we’re on the same show. They told me 9:15 Eastern time is my slot. You are on first, and then me.

  9. 9.   Stuart Says:

Is it 6pm EDT or EST Phil?

    Eastern Standard Time (EST) = GMT-5 = BST-6
    Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) = GMT-4 = BST-5

  10. 10.   The Bad Astronomer Says:

    It’s 6:00 p.m. Pacific time, so 9:00 p.m. Eastern time, so it’s 2:00 a.m. UT/GMT.

  11. 11.   Stuart Says:

Arrrghh. I’m going to have a very late night if I’m going to listen to both you and the Slacker Astronomy folks on BBC Five Live tonight. They claim to be on at 01:50 UT. So you are all going to be on the ‘Up All Night’ show.

  12. 12.   RomRod Says:

now my scientific midn is confused about the time, I would say is 2 am UT then, no? during “up all night?

  13. 13.   Michelle Rochon Says:

Oh that’s just my luck. Stuck at school for the evening, and there’s no real player on those computers! Great.

  14. 14.   Ian Musgrave Says:

2.00 am UT is 11.30 am here in SA, my work computer doesn’t have real player and I’m giving a lecture at 11.00 am anyway. Seesh, will it be archived.

  15. 15.   Ian Musgrave Says:

Apprpos Phils apparance on the " onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/www.pandasthumb.org/archives/2005/08/design_on_trial.html_br_/');">Panda’s Thumb, and now on a BBC talk show on ID, should we call him the anti-Phil?

  16. 16.   Stuart Says:

The BBC should let you ‘listen again’ for up to seven days after broadcast by using their radio player. I don’t know why it’s called listen again because I mainly use it to catch things I missed.

  17. 17.   The Bad Astronomer Says:

Yikes! That was a short interview. We were going to talk about the Moon Hoax and other issues, but I guess they only relegated three minutes. Oh well, I think I made my point about creationism though. :-)

  18. 18.   Pharyngula Says:

    Radio Free Pharyngula

I just did my little interview on BBC5. I know a screwed up once—I made the mistake of referring to ID as a "theory", when it isn't—but the virtue of radio is that nobody could see me grimace horribly and contort painfully to…

  19. 19.   arensb Says:

Wow. Both of you sound a lot taller on the web.

  20. 20.   Wolverine Says:

Though the segments were quite brief, they were still a pleasure to hear.

  21. 21.   Ian Musgrave Says:

Lucky I tuned in early, and caught the end of Phils spot. Good work Phil! I though you words on creationism pithy and appropriate. Missed PZ entirely, but it was broad cast at around 10.30 ACST, rather than the 11.30 ACST calculated from the UT times given.

Stuart, how the heck can I find the interview on the radio player? Tried it and got several hours of stuff form days before.

  22. 22.   PZ Myers Says:

Yeah, too short. They should have put the two of us on together, and given us an hour. We coulda been like Amos ‘n’ Andy, or Fibber McGee and Molly, or Abbott and Costello.

  23. 23.   queennidd Says:

listened to your interview on Radio 5, thanks, i have now found a site that I can relate to and learn from.

  24. 24.   The Bad Astronomer Says:

Sony and Cher, or Fred and Ginger.

    “Pee Zed”. Heh.

  25. 25.   Stuart Says:

Ian, you will have to wait for the current show to finish before they archive it! It should finish by 5am BST (4am GMT). The link I posted should, hopefully, go to the current show once it is there – it is currently the show from this time last week. Of course, you will need to fast forward about an hour and 10 minutes when you do to listen to it.

It is annoying that interesting interviews are always cut short.

  26. 26.   Stuart Says:

Ahhh, of course. You guys say ‘Pee Zee’ while I’ve been reading it ‘Pee Zed’.

  27. 27.   PZ Myers Says:

I’ve always liked Pee Zed, though. It always reminds me of JZ Young, the famous physiologist.

  28. 28.   Beche-la-mer Says:

Thanks to Stuart, I finally got to listen to the show using Listen Again (it was broadcast at 4am here in Sydney and at that time of the morning I like my bed just a little more than I like hearing erudite radio broadcasts).

You both (BA and PZ) did a great job considering the time allocated!

P.S. I always read PZ as Pee Zed. It didn’t even occur to me that you pronounce it differently.

  29. 29.   Dan Glastonbury Says:

Is it true that Americans say ‘Zee’ so that the ABC song rhymes?

  30. 30.   The Bad Astronomer Says:

PZ, don’t beat yourself up about the “theory” thing. If I had a nickel for every thing I screwed up on the radio, I could finance NCSE the way the Discovery Institute is funded. The thing to do is not to let it trip you up…

You can even use it sometimes. You can always backtrack a little when you say something like that, and then say, “Did I say it’s a XXXX? [insert rude noise here] I should say it’s not even close to that. It’s more like YYY, or [insert derisional laugh] more like ZZZ.”

See? And the next thing you know, you’re the darling of the media.

If that works, let me know, and I’ll try it sometime.

  31. 31.   Ian Musgrave Says:

Pee Zed said: I made the mistake of referring to ID as a “theory”, when it isn’t

Don’t let it bother you. No one will notice. My favorite blooper is when being interviewed on radio around Easter time about various astronomical goings on, the interviewer asked my how the date of Easter was calculated. My mid went blank and I open and closed my mouth like a fish. I was mortifed after wards, and depressed for days. Until people I knew who heard the interview said it was very interesting. Apparently the blooper sailed right past them.

  32. 32.   DouglasG Says:

Boy it was short! “Pee Zed” and BA. Aren’t they two members of the “A Team”? Anyway, well done you two! I look forward to the “Sonny and Cher” show if it ever comes to fruition.

  33. 33.   Astrobairn Says:

I’m an Up all Niight addict but I was annoyed last week when they gave the ID theorist a free hit with no scientist there to counter them. Good to see them getting back on track. Thought the interview sounded good and made the guy from the young earth creationist podcast they placed a clip of sound daft.

Can I just add that Rhod Sharp is one of the best broadcasters about.

  34. 34.   FrenchLeave Says:

‘Twas good. Hope you get to do more.

  35. 35.   Chris H. Says:

    Rats!

I gotback from a vacation… and tried to listen to it, but it is gone. At about 1 hour 5 minutes in the streaming audio link they are talking about hockey.

    sigh

    Dan Glastonbury Said:
    > Is it true that Americans say ‘Zee’ so that the ABC song rhymes?

It is true Americans pronounce it “zee”. It is true that “zee” rhymes in the song. It is true that if you ask Americans, they will state “zee” is better because “zed” does not rhyme.

However, the causality is not given. I think it is more accurate that Americans pronouce it “zee” because that is consistent with the pronunciation of a lot of other letters: bee (b), see (c), dee (d), eey (e), jee (g), pee (p), tee (t), vee (v). It also has the pattern of most letters where the specific consonant sound is the key letter sound first followed by the rest of the word as vowels: ay (a), iy (i), jay (j), kay (k), oh (o), cue (q), yew (u), wye (w). The other pattern being the vowel sound leading in to the consonant sound: ef (f), el (l), em (m), en (n), ar (r), es (s), ex (x). That just leaves the odds and ends of aitch (h) and double yew (w).

And no, I can’t spell the letters. Spelling letters is just wrong.
