Hawaii telescope updates

Hawaii’s recent magnitude 6.5 earthquake has of course done a lot of damage to the island. Astronomers are worried because there is a lot of pretty valuable equipment there, like the monster 10-meter Keck telescopes. If you want to stay up-to-date on what’s happening, head over to the official Keck website updates. Also, Bad Bloggee Brad Cavanaugh has an unofficial update page, too.

Thank you for the links. You know, I’ve been wondering about the astronomical facilities since the earthquake. Too bad the topic seems to be of no value to the mainstream news channels :-/

That was articulate. Actually, it’s not boring at all. When I heard about the quake the observatories came quickly to mind. Nature.com has an article today and they seem to have gotten through it OK. But q80_demon is right – a Google search yields little about the Keck telescopes in the mainstream press. I find that odd.

BTW, what are the night skies like there on the island (without a telescope)? Is is it worth packing binoculars?

Ok, I wasn’t sure if I should pack another 2lbs. in my luggage (they’re 12x63s), but if you say so! Cool…it’s months away, but I’m psyched already.

Phil Plait, the creator of Bad Astronomy, is an astronomer, lecturer, and author. After ten years working on Hubble Space Telescope and six more working on astronomy education, he struck out on his own as a writer. He's written two books, dozens of magazine articles, and 12 bazillion blog articles. He is a skeptic and fights the abuse of science, but his true love is praising the wonders of real science.
