2006 weblog awards: they have science!

submit to reddit

While reading another blog, I saw a link to the 2006 Weblog Awards, and, calloo callay, they have a science category!

I complained that there was no science category in last year’s awards, so I guess they realized their huge mistake (and I certainly hope they are shamed, shamed by this). I’m really glad they included it this year. There are a lot of great science blogs out there. Now we just need to have sub-categories to even out the field a little. Maybe they’ll add a best biologist anti-creationist cephalopodophile category.

Anyway, nominations are open, and I see someone already nominated PZ and me (we’re the first two listed, wow), which is nice… and I’ll note that whoever nominated the BABlog calls himself "Bay of Fundy", a Canadian bay known for its huge variation in water level due to tides from the Moon. How appropriate!

I’m looking forward to just reading through the list of science blogs and finding more that I like. I can’t find enough good blogs to peruse. And, well, to be honest, I’m also looking forward to kicking PZ’s tentacles in the competition.

MMMmmmmmm. Calamari.

    Clap, clap! Congrats! It’s earned.

Your’e ahead of the chimpanzee site, too. *wink*

Well, I just nominated Orac, Jennifer Ouellette, Mark Chu-Carroll and David Brin in various categories.

Why don’t we just start our own annual award for science blogs? There have to be enough of them out there to field some serious competition, even if we divided them into a few fairly broad categories. How does an award get respectability, anyway — have lots of people vote for it? Choose the winners wisely the first time around, until the “brand” of the award is proven?

I’ll have you know that the guy with the tentacles is going to have a real edge in the nude jello wrestling part of the competition.

Well, I for one, am going to go nominate you above the others because your blog is the “hub” to the other blogs I read (at least in my M.O.) In other words, I’m constantly coming here and then going to the links on the side. Contrary to what BA Brother once thought, I trust Phil’s judgment – and he picks them well. And he’s generally a good guy who attracts good people.

    …and I’m such a brown noser. (-8~

Oh, I guess the ones I’d nominate are already there. Bad Astronomy, Pharyngula, Cocktail Party Physics…oh wait, Emily’s blog needs to be there.

Just let us know when it’s time to vote.

On a scale of 1 to 10, the BA blog is definitely a tenner, kinda like my favorite band,,,

    GAry 7

Umm, Gary, that wouldn’t be The Grateful Dead, would it? ;-) Well, I was never a Dead Head, but at least they immortalized my name in a song…kinda…sorta.

Well, when it’s time to vote the BA has a BAUT board of several hundred loyal readers that might fry up some calamari. ;-)

Actually, that was I who nominated you. I write a blog called Bay of Fundie. It’s a play on words, both a reference to the amazing tides of Canada and to the crazy behavior of the religious right. The blog itself is devoted to combatting the misinformation spouted by the extremists. In the process, I sometimes post articles about skepticism and science. I just posted an article about human tails.

Anyway, when I saw the science category, I knew that you had to be in it. There are several very good science blogs, but this is the one I turn to when I need answers about the Universe.
