Modem demoted

submit to reddit

So my cable modem at is on the fritz. I was able to establish this after upgrading my router firmware, swapping three cables, updating my wireless security, and rewiring the system twice. So I am without the Internets at home, and I can’t swap my cable modem for a working model, since today is Sunday and ComCast is closed.

Basically, I’ve come into work on a Sunday so that I can say I can’t make my usual big Monday morning post.

So to keep you occupied, I’ll post two short items:

  1. I’m not sure the Leonids stormed last night (it was foggy where I live). But reports are still coming in, including comments in my Leonids post from Saturday. Did you see any? Leave a note!
  2. I am totally chuffed to report that science bloggers Jennifer Ouellette and Sean Carroll are merging their waveforms! Ah, duality and unity. Geekdom seeps even into love. I’m really happy for them, but hoping that Jen-Luc is still available. I’m sure Mrs. Bad Astronomer would understand.

That’s it for now. See y’all later on Monday.

OK, this seems like an opportunity to solve several problems at once — you know, kill a flock of birds with one meteor. We should follow the example of old fairy tales and hold a grand tournament to find which suitor-avatar can have the hand of Jen-Luc Piquant. In one stroke, we could solve the problem of her, ahem, technological singularity and tell who is the best science blogger of all the Blogotubes!

I was getting an observed hourly rate of about 2 from midnight -1am in Alabama. Not a good observation, then the clouds rolled in. I will get the complete night’s story from Rob on monday, but the last prediction was that no storm was predicted before dawn.

You’re a real trooper, Plait. That and you’ve got a serious addiction to the web. Here’s hoping you never find the appropriate 12-step program. (Actually, considering their efficacy, here’s hoping you do!)

  4. 4.   Gary Ansorge Says:

Hmmm, 12 step. Is that a new dance?

Will keep a look out for the Lion this am, at least for a little while.

You’re without the Internets? Internets? How many Internets are there? :-)

My modems seem to fry easily – I’ve been through four in four years. I hate places like CompUSA, because they didn’t tell me that it’s a snap to replace a modem yourself. When I brought it to a small shop with these odd, heavyset guys who smoke in front of customers, one guy showed me, and I was like, “Oh…that’s easy.” I was so embarrassed. Now I dust my CPU innards.

Regarding Jennifer and Sean – who would have thought APS meetings could be such hotbeds of romance? Cheers! to the postive aspect of the Internet, though…

…from Blake’s link, this may be all too true.

  7. 7.   Bora Boring Says:

It’s 4:25 a.m…that would be “Cheers! to the positive aspects of the Internet.”

    This is apt, too.

  8. 8.   Melusine Says:

Shouldn’t be Bora Boring – that was a joke to the Bora Bora guy who harassed Phil, and who was rightly deleted. Sorry. Need. More. Coffee.

  9. 9.   Gary Ansorge Says:

Melusine: Tanks for the link to Blake.
    Very insightful!!!

Now I have somewhere else to spend my retirement time,,,

Just in case you were unaware that most cable modems have one, have you checked the cable modem status page? They often have a log of what connection problems they are having. The ip address depends on the brand (like a router), and is something like http://192.168.100.1/ (if that works for you).

No luck seeing anything from Oz – well at least not Adelaide or atleatsagain my corner thereof. Too cloudy.

Slept outside last night an’ all – on a swag on the lawn, looking up … at the clouds with very occasional partial breaks and no meteors. Did spot a bright satellite or very high altidue plane briefly and that’s all folks.

Fully overcast on the other two nights too.

    Ah, computers – can’t live with’em, can’t kill em.

What they really need to invent is a just bl__ work button!
