More proof of the Evil One’s influence

Still unsure that Dark Forces want me to win the Blog contest? I went to check the scores a few minutes ago, and this is what I saw:

It’s like the Number of the Beast, but with an extra 6! That means Extra Evil Added.

Mwahahahahahaha!

Friday is the last day to ensure that the invertebratofascists don’t cross our borders! Bad Astronomy and Pharyngula are less than one percentage point apart, so literally every vote counts here. Vote!

Oh, and on Friday I will post the list of links to everyone who shilled for me. I expect I’ll be up late tonight typing that entry up.

“That means Extra Evil Added.” Shouldn’t that be extra “bad”?

    Bad astronomer, now extra bad!

When I voted at 7:10 PM this was the count:

    BA:6732

    Phary: 6716

    Go BA!

  3. 3.   Grand Lunar Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 6:29 pm

    I agree with Zoot.
    Say, how about this:

    Phil Plait: The BADDER Astronomer

Right up there with Rex Dart: Eskimo Spy

  4. 4.   Dean Baird Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 6:48 pm

I’ve unleashed my students on this project. And offered a little sugar in the event BA wins. I won’t liken it to calling in the cavalry, but some of my students have considerable computer skills (including the one who figured out how to stuff the e-ballot box during the Miss America polling).

    I’m just sayin’.

Hey, no cheating! Merciless shilling, pandering, and shameless vote-begging, however, are fine. Mandatory, even.

  6. 6.   Zoot Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 7:03 pm

Cheating instructions removed by The Bad Astronomer.

  7. 7.   Zoot Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 7:05 pm

Oppps.. I posted before I saw BA’s post.

  8. 8.   PZ Myers Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 7:20 pm

Tsk, tsk. You realize now that I if I do have to make my bitter, whiny concession speech tomorrow, I’ll be able to point to Zoot’s comment, say “j’accuse!”, and suck all the joy out of Phil’s triumph? That’s really no fun at all.

  9. 9.   Tara Mobley Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 7:20 pm

Well, I do hope you win. I did a little shilling on MySpace, but that should barely count.

  10. 10.   gopher65 Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 7:23 pm

Zoot, I’m sure they will double check the IP’s when the voting is done and correct for the cheating (it basically says as much at the bottom of the voting page). More than one vote from the same IP during the same 24 hour period will probably not end up being counted.

  11. 11.   Strider1974 Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 7:27 pm

    BA is in the lead!

    BA – 6847
    PZ – 6758

    Squish The Squids :)

  12. 12.   Melusine Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 7:30 pm

Ya, Zoot, I don’t think sharing cheating tactics is a good thing. I’ve just been plodding along with my over 20 votes on my home and work computers (and well, some of my co-workers voted too). That’s no fun fiddling with that cheating stuff. I hope Phil deletes that post so victory will be that much sweeter. :-)

It’s nice to see Respectful Insolence has a healthy lead over The Amazing Adventures of Diet Girl (though maybe I should visit that site after scarfing down so much chocolate). Orac has a good sense of humor along with his combating woo. I’ve been voting for him every day.

Good Math, Bad Math has respectable votes considering he’s caught between a campaign between Stars and Squids. He posted a recent article, which I was delighted to find that as innumerate as I am (and not proud of it), I’m not as CLUELESS as the Verizon people. Perhaps the guy should have walked them through one more step on the calculator, i.e. 1.00 x .002% and then multiplied .00002 x the kilobytes. Maybe nothing would have helped. Anyway, that was an amusing post you can read here. I don’t understand half (no, probably more) of what he talks about, but he appears to be an upstanding guy.

Bad Astronomy is 90 ahead right now. Woo hoo!

  13. 13.   gp Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 8:04 pm

    dude! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa U R winning!

  14. 14.   Zoot Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 8:14 pm

gopher65 : Yeah, you’re probably right. It says cheaters will be banned so they are probably aware of that method.

  15. 15.   The Bad Astronomer Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 8:34 pm

Yeah, we may have to wait a while after the deadline to find out how they will tally the votes.

  16. 16.   TheBlackCat Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 8:35 pm

BA now ahead by 91 points. You are almost there!

  17. 17.   spacewriter Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 9:12 pm

“Yeah, we may have to wait a while after the deadline to find out how they will tally the votes.”

all the more reason to keep voting til it hurts!

    But HONEST voting… ;)

  18. 18.   jokermage Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 9:33 pm

I’ve done what I could. For victory!

  19. 19.   Christian Burnham Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 11:02 pm

It should be easy for them to use the IP address to check for multiple voting over a 24 hour period.

  20. 20.   idlemind Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 11:39 pm

There are three people in this household with their own computers, sharing a single IP address. Nearly anyone with a cable or DSL router is in the same situation. So restricting to a single vote IP would disenfranchise people.

The situation is even worse for dialup users, several of whom will be assigned the same IP during the day. Worst off of all are people behind corporate firewalls, where thousands of people may look to the outside world as a single IP.

Dialups and NAT (network address translation) essentially killed the one IP/one user relationship years ago.

  21. 21.   Dean Baird Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 11:53 pm

No worries, BA. My students may vote en masse and more than once, but I trust the good people conducting the poll can foil any HS kids’ attempts to cheat. If they can enlist the aid of their MySpace friends near and far, all the merrier.

  22. 22.   KingNor Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 12:40 am

BA ahead by about 100 thursday 11:31pm pacific.

  23. 23.   Akusai Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 5:04 am

One more time, to bring in the stragglers.

  24. 24.   seaducer Says:

Damn idlemind! What a buzz kill you are! I mean, jeez, there are no hanging chads in cyberspace, right? Right?

  25. 25.   Elwood Herring Says:

I couldn’t decide so I voted once each for Pharyngula and Bad Astronomy. I hope that is okay you guys both rock!

  27. 27.   Ruth Says:
