I am an astronomer, writer, and skeptic. I likes reality the way it is, and I aims to keep it that way. My real name is Phil Plait, and I run the Bad Astronomy blog.

We were discussing the ICON, "Kilroy" and wondered where he came from???
I am 58yrs and I can recall him since my childhood.
My dad said it came from te 2nd WW in Europe, as the English advanced.
Has anyone got other ideas.???

I love the wallpapers, particularly the moonlanding. Did anybody notice the date on the clipboard other than it was April 1st? Phil, you were only 4 1/2 years old. I always knew you were precocious.

Steve Cooperman Says: "Gosh, it’s easy to tell that the wallpaper of Aldrin at the crater is a hoax because the ID board isn’t reflected in his faceplate! The hoax is a hoax!"

Minor nit, that's not Aldrin. They didn't have a rover on Apollo 11 (only 15 thru 17). I believe that's Jack Schmitt during Apollo 17.

It's interesting that on his official NASA bio page (http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/schmitt-hh.html) it says: "On his first journey into space, Dr. Schmitt occupied the lunar module pilot seat for Apollo 17 -- the last scheduled manned Apollo mission to the United States..."

I believe they meant "to the moon" there.

A festive Chrismawanzahaunikaus to all!

I read the Bad Astronomy blog when I have spare time to enjoy it -- and I never fail to learn something new from what I read on it. In terms of wallpaper, tho, thanks for the Cassini image of Saturn earlier this year, that has been the wallpaper on my computer and on my cellular phone. On my computer, it has been recently replaced by an image from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, which I also discovered indirectly by reading this blog. So much beauty, fun and education -- not to mention wallpaper -- pretty groovy!
