I am an astronomer, writer, and skeptic. I likes reality the way it is, and I aims to keep it that way. My real name is Phil Plait, and I run the Bad Astronomy blog.

Sheesh, BA -- don't you EVER read your email?

The running theory isn't that a bad software update took out MGS, it was a parameter update (McNamee apparently repeated a somewhat mangled version of things). More details here:

http://geekcounterpoint.net/files/GC052B.html

On an unrelated note, today (1/12/2007) would be the 100th birthday of Sergey Korolyov -- the brains behind the Soviet space program. So if you like space exploration, toss back a cold shot of vodka for Sergey (you could make the case that he pretty much started the "space race" all by himself).

Too bad for the Surveyor. It was a workhorse.

You can't send bad software to computers. GIGO.

Look what happened to HAL! It wasn't sent bad software. It wasn't told to lie. It was merely told to withhold truth. And that was enough to fry its circuits and turn it homicidal!
