When I was in grad school and taking an observational astronomy class, I used to enjoy watching my (mostly male, natch) classmates point the telescope. There is something undeniably manly about it — though I’m happy to say this never deterred me as a woman from pursuing astronomy.

Funnily enough, when I later worked at an observatory, I heard one of the instrument maintenance guys affectionately refer to the telescope as “she”, like a ship. I thought that was cute.

GROAN! Why did that pose not surprise me.

Though that is a good demonstration of why most astronomers succumb to “size envy” for telescopes. Hey, it’s not just size, it’s also location and performance that counts, too.
