I have an article in Seed Magazine (online)!

submit to reddit

Many BABloggees may already know about Science Blogs, a group of science blogs collected by Seed magazine (PZ Myers of Pharyngula is part of the Collective). Seed is truly excellent, and is currently my favorite general science mag.

I’ve talked with the good folks at Seed/Science Blogs, and I really want to write for them, but my BA "brand" is a little too strong for me to give it up! But we worked something out: I wrote an article for their online magazine! It’s about the COSMOS dark matter survey; I wrote about it here on BABlog too.

I’m very happy about this. The article I wrote was testing the waters for both of us, really, to see how well we do together. So if you read it and like it, you should let them know!

That’s a hint, folks. You should really let them know. I’m hoping to write a lot more for them in the future. And if you don’t get Seed magazine (I don’t think it’s very well known yet) you should really check it out. It’s excellent.

Congrats BA. But…”woot”? I saw that on a note my niece wrote a few months ago. I am only 33 but I feel so old. What does that mean???

  2. 2.   Teapot Says:

The heck with writing articles, your photoshopping skills are wonderful :)

  3. 3.   JD Says:

Sweet! I’ll definitely let them know I want more. As much as I love conspiracists and pseudoscientists getting slammed, I enjoy your purely scientific posts much more.

  4. 4.   Ian Menzies Says:

    ”woot”

Actually, it should be “w00t”, and it is pretty much equivalent to “hooray!”

  5. 5.   Teapot Says:

Also, spelled like this: \/\/007 if you’re uber-1337.

  6. 6.   RPink Says:

    Great article, Phil.

I remember first reading the Zwicky story last year when the image of dark matter was posted on APOD. Now I just have to figure out what dark energy is.

  7. 7.   Bootlady Teri Says:

FWIW, I’m a ‘hard copy’ subscriber to Seed Magazine and will happily write a plea to see you in their pages.

Am I the only who is reminded of OMNI when reading Seed? Or am I just showing my age by stating that?

  8. 8.   Zero Says:

seaducer, according to urbandictionary (dot com):

Woot originated as a hacker term for root (or administrative) access to a computer. However, with the term as coincides with the gamer term, “w00t”.

“w00t” was originally an truncated expression common among players of Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game for “Wow, loot!”

  9. 9.   seaducer Says:

Thanks guys! Wow, urban dic-online? Crazy…

  10. 10.   Sherry Austin Says:

I sent an email to the “info” address. I hope it gets there!

  11. 11.   PZ Myers Says:

Seed is much better than Omni — it’s less credulous, for one thing.

Hey, Phil, maybe you could cozy up next to me in the print pages, too.

  12. 12.   The Bad Astronomer Says:

Teri- I read Omni (cough cough) years ago too. PZ is right– while they did have some good science articles they were way into UFOs and the Bermuda Triangle. Seed is slick, the layout is great, the articles well written, and the photography is stunning.

PZ– well, I’m sure it’s slimy and cold cozying up to you and your squiddish followers, but certainly no colder than the depths of space. From your lips to, uh, the editor’s ears!

    Sherry, JD– thanks. :-)

  13. 13.   C18H27NO3 Says:

    Great article, Phil.

I sent an e-mail to the info@ address as well.

Seed looks interesting. I will check it out…

  14. 14.   Geroge Says:

Oooh, nicely done, and what an ending….

“And they don’t get any bigger than figuring out what the matter is with the Universe.”

They’ll never take root without writters like you.

  15. 15.   Nigel Depledge Says:

“PZ Myers of Pharyngula is part of the Collective”

So, BA, are you saying that PZ has been assimilated? Maybe that’s why he beat you in the weblog awards: Resistance is futile.

  16. 16.   Nancy A. Says:

    Great article, Phil!!

  17. 17.   Irishman Says:

Phil, this sentence is still a bit confusing:

… they have created a map two degrees on a side (roughly 15 times the area of the full Moon) and 6 billion light years deep.

It took me till the end of the article to clarify this is one small segment of the sky being mapped. And there are no hints as to which segment of the sky.

  18. 18.   B Rauscher Says:

So, we must PAY to read your work now? Hmm, I don’t see PLAIT yet in the Urban Dictionary… is it time to add an entry?

  19. 19.   BigBadSis Says:

Great article, Phil. Really enjoyed it. I’ve decided to subscribe for my son — well, and maybe myself as well. Do you ever listen to Skywatch out in California? Our local NPR station plays it on Thursday mornings. They had a segment on dark matter February 1st. I’d be curious to hear what you thought of it. http://hubblesite.org/explore_astronomy/skywatch/. Thanks for your article. I’ve posted it in my office’s kitchen.
