I am an astronomer, writer, and skeptic. I likes reality the way it is, and I aims to keep it that way. My real name is Phil Plait, and I run the Bad Astronomy blog.

tsg, there is a Linux client, and it's reasonably stable. Just sign up as a Linux beta tester. I played with it back in January (before I decided it was totally boring and I removed it from my computer).

To sign up secondlife (dot) com/?u=d4d1b0cb52fb1ba4952e930e3c4d9a5d

It takes all of 10 minutes to pick a name and sign up (it's free, later it's easy to use PayPal or a credit card to get funds to buy stuff when you're "inworld" if you're going to stay with it).

In general, try to use it in off-peak hours and you won't be bogged down by server overload. Despite all the haters, it's nevertheless an incredible platform to potentially do every manner of thing, fantastic and real.

As voice enters (next month, and it will be optional) and as an increasingly photo-realistic virtual world emerges, the "metaverse" platform will become more immersive and amazing. I would recommend that anyone with a fairly new computer and fairly fast connection check it out. Ignore all the crap and just focus on the many good things. Check out the NASA sim.
