I am an astronomer, writer, and skeptic. I likes reality the way it is, and I aims to keep it that way. My real name is Phil Plait, and I run the Bad Astronomy blog.

My post of March 11, 2008 was made only because many of Barry Setterfield's supporters still maintain, on several websites, that his claim that the speed of light has decreased in the last 300 years has not been refuted. Our analysis indicated this is just not true. There is no PROPER statistical evidence to support Setterfield.

Wow how did all this happen! I was sitting here reading a very cool blog by Phil, That I comprihended just fine and then all of sudden everything got real twisted. I read all comments trying to see if I could learn something new, but Im now just confused. I dont even know how old Earth is anymore. I thought it was 4.5 billion, now we got people out there saying 6000 years. what about ancient Egypt 10,000 years ago, what about the Dinosours? Yea what about the dinosours! Does Jesus love the dinosours? Is that off key enough for you peoples! make sense! Ok many of you make good sense some seem like they are having a hard time understanding Phils blog. Its not cryptic, pretty straight forward, no hating.
Im from Iceland, I live by the ocean, I live close to nature. I dont need know quot
'' An extensive statistical analysis of the historic measurments of the speed of light that indicates that there has been no statistically significant change in this constant during the last 300 years''
to tell me there have been no significant changes, I know there are, I see it everyday. Just this week I had a confused polor bear in my back yard, he was most liking heading towards the north pole but his ice rock melted on his way and he landed in Iceland. I live in freaking Iceland and we barly had snow last winter instead we had hurricanes! fun for me living by the ocean, no! it was freaking scary.
man I have know idea who is right, christians, creationsist, scientist. I just want this fixed! no more polor bears in Iceland! I like them but they get shot dead if they come here and we dont want that because they are endagered because they cant reach there food cause the poles are melting!
P.s. No use bashing my comment, Im not a genius, I only know what I know and experience first hand , prejudges is so last millanium and I do eat kittens for lunch

While I don't agree with the young - earth theories, you need to do some research for artifact dating, especially Carbon 15 dating, which I'm supposing is what was used. Beyond a certain point (450,000 - 900,000 years is far beyond that point) dating is very unreliable with our current methods. Eventually, we have to face the fact that we DO NOT KNOW.

We will never know everything - we are not all powerful. There will ALWAYS be mysteries.

I myself am a Roman Catholic, but I have never denied that there is simply no way that I would be able to KNOW whether or not God exists, unless (A) I died, in which case I couldn't tell you, or (B) He appeared to me.

I'm a human, just like you. Until we build a time machine, if that's possible, we won't KNOW what happened int he past. For all we know, the young - earth people are right. The guy who claims that magma is really from alien bombs is right.

Major climate changes, does not happen by magic - this includes ice ages. The earth does not alternate between glacial period and warming trend with no valid reason. To say "nature" causes major climate changes, is correct, but one should recognize we are part of nature. Humans are not some super-natural beings. A more accurate question, is which part of nature causes a specific major climate change.

Humans did not cause the ice age on earth, it was most likely caused by an external influence. Climates are caused by rotation, and movement, of the earth relative to the Sun. But the Sun also moves, as well as the solar system, in larger periodic cycles.

Space by default very cold. If the Sun is blocked or the earth goes out of orbit for a short period, it doesn't take much time for the ocean to freeze.

After each major climate change, nature tends toward equilibrium again.
