Phil,

While you (and most of your readers) and I don't share the same theological views, I agree with you on this one. I contacted both Michigan senators asking for a big Nay vote on this.

"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8"

>>> “Bible Thumper Hypocrite” Isn’t that a redundancy?

Not really. As anti-religious as I am, I recognize there are some who *do* walk the walk. That's why I give all my old stuff to the local Salvation Army store.

Example: while The United Way was holding expensive PR press conferences after Hurricane Katrina, the Salvation Army folks had quietly gone into New Orleans before the rain stopped falling with mobile canteens and field kitchens. They have a military style organization (hence "Army") that does seem effective in bad situations.

I may not agree with their views on many, well, MOST things, but I can really respect their charitable efforts. They actually have their own ham radio network for disaster relief coordination. I'd rather support that than some overpaid executives at an uber CorporaCharity that trickles 20 cents on a dollar to those that actually need it.

I really like this blog. ...And I'm a fundamentalist Christian (but not the young Earth variety).

I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that God is behind this amazing universe we live in. There's some pretty smart scientists out there that believe it too. I'm in good company. Probably one of the latest to 'come out' is Francis Collins, head of the human genome project (http://www.ctlibrary.com/40487).

I do think that Christians are going about it the wrong way when they try to sneak a creationist agenda into the science classroom, so I pretty much agree with Phil on this one.

It's unfortunate that Christians are known for what we're against instead of what we are for. Christ summed it up when asked what the greatest commandment was:

"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." Mark 12: 29 - 31

Sergeant Zim, the south's conversion from the Democrats to the Republicans seems to have happened mostly after LBJ had the audacity to sign laws that made blacks first class citizens. The southern conseratives were of course upset that they couldn't lynch anyone any more and they had to treat African Americans like human beings. Fortunately (in their eyes) now they have the gays to fill that role.
Goldwater endorsing the rights of states to have segregation if they chose and Nixon's southern strategy didn't hurt either.

"Bible Thumper Hypocrite"

Isn't that a redundancy?

Here in Redneckistan (The American Southeast - used to be solidly Dem, but good PR coupled with bad luck - and some admittedly poor performing politicians - changed all that) calling our senators is an exercise in futility - unless you are a "Dittohead/Great American".

Done, it will be interesting to see if a Conservative Senator from Georgia (home of Cobb County and anti-evolution stickers) will do anything. I can't help but feel my protest fell on deaf ears.

Here's a link about the group in question:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_Family_Forum

And their actual site:

http://www.lafamilyforum.org/

I *totally* want to parody that site. It's tough to parody things that are almost self parodies, so it's a challenge.

Isn't Vitter the guy who was banging the hookers?

Not that I'm opposed to that, being fairly libertarian on activities between consenting adults, but he's Mr. Bible Thumper Hypocrite in addition to all this.

Ah, Wikipedia, is there anything you do not know?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Vitter

$300 an hour? That's cheaper then Nevada where it's legal. I guess the black market really *does* float to the fair price of a product or service.

He supports Rudy Giuliani's. Huh. Not what I would have expected.

Can we somehow breed a new generation of free market politicians WITHOUT the recessive religious gene?

Are my New York reps in on this? If so, I'm so there. Even if I'm too young to vote. If Vitter's still in office come 2013, I'll vote him out.
In other news, yesterday, Branson announced that he has given up on finding Steve Fossett alive.

will Canada follow in the US footsteps?

Not a snowball's chance...

Religious yahooery promulgated by the government is generally not viewed well at all in Canada... which is funny given that our Queen is head of the Church of England. In fact, the last bastion of state-sponsored religion (funding of Catholic schools) is coming slowly under fire and has been abolished in many provinces.

The attempt to table a bill with such a flagrantly religious provision would be political suicide as the Conservative party leader found out in the recent Ontario election.

Hello from your northern neighbour,

I'm a lurker and have been reading the blog, and the forum before that, for years and I rarely intervene.

I sometime get the feeling that I'm watching a train wreck about to happen on this whole topic. And what worries me, will Canada follow in the US footsteps?
