Um… looks okay but I don’t see how it’s really amazingly different than other online music/radio stuff like lastfm or shoutcast. They say they will soon have a satellite service though. That’s…interesting. I wonder how they plan on pulling that off. I don’t see much about any near satellites being launched and you can’t really do mobile satelltie too well on C/Ku band stuff..
Gary, I appreciate the comment — I love Angela Gunn madly, of course — but that material is copyrighted and it’s illegal to reprint it without permission. So I changed the comment to a link and removed the illegal bits.
No worries, but please don’t C&P stuff here in the future.
I forgot oabout slacker radio! I downloaded the entire archive.org collection of Old Time Radio shows. I actually have been listening to Dimension X, X-1, and Orson Wells’ “War of the Worlds” the past few nights whilst chasing 17P/Holmes.
There are a zillion services like this already as far as I can tell, but my access seems limited. What makes this one different? It does say it’s available whether you’re “at home, in the car or on the go” but it also says, “Unfortunately, Slacker Personal Radio is currently only available in the United States.”
Does it, after you provide your IP-specific proof that you’re not some sort of dirty foreigner, offer anything novel? And I’d be quite interested to learn what licenses they need that everyone else seemingly doesn’t – either they’re the only honest ones and the rest of the US Internet streaming media companies are breaking laws, or they’re something different altogether.
What makes this different is that it’s the first one I heard about that I liked. I have fooled around with other online radio sites and haven’t been happy, but the classical selection on this one is pretty good. I was listening and suddenly Danny Elfman’s PeeWee Herman soundtrack came up! Made my whole day.
Hmmm, I’ll have to try it after work and see how it compares to Pandora (as it seems it’s operating on a similar concept, what with the US-only service and all…).
Have not spent much time with the Jazz yet (but I do distrust anything with a listing for “smooth jazz”, which is an oxymoron.
Maybe I was unlucky with the Classical selections. I heard nothing but overdone chestnuts. Unless they get away from a “greatest hits” mentality, I won’t be listening much.
Thanks for the referral, but for now I think I prefer Radio IO, or better still, my iPod

Oh, it’s only available in the U.S.
I’m all for international net neutrality!

Marko we will need to fix distribution(copy) rights first before it would become available internationally

I turned to Slacker, hit the bluegrass station, and it is excellent.
Phil, I owe you a beer.

Thought Y’All might find this aside about nerd actors interesting. It’s from Angela Gunns column at USA today.

Have you ever tried Jango? Given: it’s not as catchy-sounding as “Slacker”, but it’s still pretty nifty, since it’s a bit more social-oriented.

So much for the “borderless” internet and free trade. The RIAA pigopolists strike again….

Or they’re lying.

Nice find and thanks for the heads-up!
Been looking for a new I-net radio svc since I moved and, for the last hour+, this one has delivered..
I think my search is over..
