Bite my shiny metal DVD

Huzzah, everyone! Today is the day the new Futurama DVD is released! The I Love Bender website has many details.

I happened to catch a sneak peak, and the movie is very funny. There are some slow parts, but the funny stuff way more than redeems them. I haven’t seen the DVD extras yet, but I can’t wait!

And with more evidence that Angela Gunn and I are on the same wavelength, she reminds us that Firefly got made into a movie because of DVD sales, so if you buy the Futurama DVDs, maybe they’ll make more of those, too. I was thinking this exact thought just the other day. Angela is cool.

I also caught an *ahem* “sneak peek”. It starts off pretty weak (spam jokes? Really?) but gets better as it goes along. I’ll probably buy the DVD soon.

I had seen the DVD noted in various places, and never bothered/remembered to check to see if it was a new production or a compilation of episodes. Now I know. On to the Amazon wish list it goes. Man — I still have 4 seasons of “The Simpsons” (and commentaries) to watch on DVD. Perhaps I’ll get through them if the SAG strike continues.

    Sweet Honeybee of Infinity!!!

This was totally worth it! The lines by Al Gore really highlight the film. I noticed that with few exceptions they included every character ever shown in the series. And the way they explain the 2000 election ‘outcome’ is fantastic.

Picked it up earlier today and watched it. By God they still got it. Very funny with some great humor. I suck at movie reviews so let me give ya’ll a rundown of what special features are on the DVD.

Special features (What I’ve watched so far anyway):

The DVD features the “An inconvenient truth” promo that was featured on YouTube some time ago. There is also a video commentary featuring David X Coen, Matt Groening, and Al Gore. The commentary is OK, Matt doesn’t say much at all but still it’s OK and worth watching at least once.

Bite my Shiny Metal X is a 26 minute long math lecture featuring Futurama crew members and a mathematician who is referenced in the film. She and the case show off some of the math in jokes in the show and in the movie. Very fascinating but I recommend watching it after the movie as it spoils some of the plot.

Futurama returns is a recording of a live reading of a comic detailing Futurama’s cancellation, broadcast by Cartoon Network, and subsequent revival using the Futurama characters. Also see if you spot the other famous characters from Fox TV shows in the comic panels.

The original revival announcement from Comic-con is present on the DVD but as that short is present on the DVD in an extended form it’s not really worth watching.

There are a few more extras but I’m not sure if I hit the word limit and haven’t watched everything. Also I picked up the Best Buy version with bonus DVD that includes a promo for the next movie but I have yet to watch it and House is on in three minutes. All in all an excellent movie with great special features.

OMG!!! 22minutes of HYPNOTOAD!!!! Special features has an entire episode of HYPNOTOAD!!! ALL HAIL THE HYPNOTOAD!!!

Plus there are easter eggs galore! Check the head museum and you’ll see some people you would never expect (Cartman!?)

I just got finished watching. I don’t think I was prepared for the shock of new Futurama. It’s like having your dead dog come back to life years later, after you’ve already come to terms with the loss. (Seymore!!!)

Plus, it was just a lot to absorb. I could actually tell while watching it that I wasn’t catching everything. I wish I hadn’t watched it while I was so tired. Oh Well, there’s always tommorrow, and the next day. (I had to resist the urge to immediately watch it again with commentary.)

Anyways, everyone go out and buy a copy of the DVD, if you can afford it. Vote with your wallet. 20 wingwangs speaks a lot louder than some idiot Nielson family. We’ve got four movies in the bag, now lets go for some new broadcast episodes!

    Urn Forearm Bird Bird!

Well, sorry to disagree with most here, but I thought you could have made one, possibly two at a stretch, very good twenty+ minute episodes out of it. But, it was at best barely average for an hour and a half production and I say that with disappointment, being a huge Futurama fan who has really been looking forward to this. Perhaps the extras make the DVD worth buying but the main feature sure doesn’t and I won’t be wasting any money on it.
