Oh noes! Another blog contest!

submit to reddit

A trackback from another blog led me to the somewhat lamentable discovery that Performancing is holding another best blog contest… and both PZ and I are on their list.

However, I think I’ll be spared any nail-biting last-minute tie-breaking deals: the category is for Science and Technology, which means we’re up against monster sites Engadget, Ars Technica, and Gizmodo.

I think I won’t worry too much about this one. :-)

As a new reader of your site (thanks to the previous contest with climateaudit.org) may I wish you the best of luck anyway.

Excellent site, it deserves a higher profile and the more publicity it gets the better.

  2. 2.   BaldApe Says:

One of my many mottoes is “Don’t worry about what other people think until you discover evidence that they do.”

You have my utmost respect. That should be enough. :-)

  3. 3.   Michelle Says:

Agh! Gizmodo is there too? I’m in a pickle.

I absolutely adore Gizmodo… And I adore the BA too!

  4. 4.   The Bad Astronomer Says:

Michelle, as long as you don’t vote for Pharyngula! Sheesh!
    :-)

  5. 5.   Seamyst Says:

Just voted for you! Actually, you’re way ahead right now, at 36% of the vote. Next is Ars Technica, at 17%. It doesn’t say how many votes have been submitted, though.

  6. 6.   Michael Lonergan Says:

Could the BA be the Ron Paul of Bloggers and launch a BA Revolution to win the vote?

  7. 7.   Matt Says:

I don’t know, the BA seems like he’s much more rational than Ron Paul, and a funnier guy, too. If BA does win the vote, well then, against such heavyweights I think this will more than make up for Phil’s prior loss to PZ!

  8. 8.   bigjohn Says:

Even though there are a couple of good blogs on the list, I will vote for you anyway…although PZ’s blog is pretty good, too…hmmm…

  9. 9.   Michael Lonergan Says:

Just voted. The BA is wayyyyyyyyy out in front.

  10. 10.   The Bad Astronomer Says:

Well, like I said before, I don’t think it’ll last. Those tech sites are huge, with far more readers than this blog. Once they hear about this (I only found out by accident; it would be nice if someone involved had mentioned it to me!) it’ll go differently, I bet.

  11. 11.   Richard B. Drumm Says:

    Phil:
Have a good time in Austin! Wish I could be there…
Voted for BA, of course, and here’s the current standing:

    Pharyngula - 14%
    Ars Technica - 12%
    Gizmodo - 9%
    Engadget - 12%
    Bad Astronomy - 47%
    The Apple Blog - 1%
    Other - 4%

So far so good! Your toll is equal to the top 4 other blogs!
    Rich

  12. 12.   Michael Lonergan Says:

    BA, you’re so humble! :)

  13. 13.   Gary Ansorge Says:

BA: Just voted. You’re up to 49% at 11.45 PM, 1/5/08.

  14. 14.   Matt Says:

Just voted for BA myself, still at 49% at 12:36 AM EST 1/6/08

  15. 15.   Chris Says:

It’s 12:40 am, EST, 2008/01/06, and you’re still at 49%! Happy to help out the cause!

  16. 16.   Remek Says:

BA- “Those tech sites are huge…”

Agreed, plus they have it rather easier because of the massive amount of widely distributed marketing materials/press releases/’insider leaks’ they more easily and constantly have to sift thru and refresh.

It’s rather unfair to lump both together, IMO.

For example, just look at just a couple of examples for science - sciencedaily.com & physorg.com. Even with the amount of updates sciencedaily.com keeps up with in articles, journal additions, and press releases, they don’t touch other, important, individual science-related updates that places like the scienceblogs compendium site (as well as your site) add to science-related info.

Seems to me sites like engadget.com and gizmodo.com have much easier resources to keep up with their commercial technology/gadget focus than a comprehensive science-only site would. (plus they have lots of companies more or less throwing money at them in terms of advertising space revenue -vs- what a science-only site could count on)

  17. 17.   PZ Myers Says:

Hey, I’m also up for “most controversial“, with Perez Hilton and Daily Kos. I doubt that I stand much of a chance there, either.

  18. 18.   Janine Says:

So, should there be a blog war again?

  19. 19.   ExGeekDogTrainer Says:

I just voted (for BA, of course!), but you’re slipping. Even worse, however - PZ’s coming up fast. I worry about what tomorrow will bring and in so many other ways… - g^2

    Pharyngula 34%
    Ars Technica 8%
    Gizmodo 5%
    Engadget 8%
    Bad Astronomy 41%
    The Apple Blog 2%
    Other: 3%

  20. 20.   RinzeWind Says:

“However, I think I’ll be spared any nail-biting last-minute tie-breaking deals: the category is for Science and Technology, which means we’re up against monster sites Engadget, Ars Technica, and Gizmodo.”

Which is sad: when publishing a blog, everybody has the same amount of potential readers. It’s only the quality of the writings that will help the winner.

Said that, it’s even sadder that the old gadgets blogs (which are a review of a review of a review) keep turning up in this contests.

  21. 21.   Marko Pyhajarvi Says:

Come on, Phil. You’re blog will beat Gizmodo! ;)

  22. 22.   DrFlimmer Says:

Just voted, but Pharyngula is ahead with 41% to BA 38%, that’s not how it meant to be ;-)

  23. 23.   lexcarter Says:

I am supporting PZ in the “most controversial” contest.
and BA in the “science contest”. this is in accordance with my belliefs.
it is only when i have to choose, between BA vs PZ that i have to
stand up as a true BA fan.

  24. 24.   Matt Says:

Nooo, 50% PZ to 34% BA! We must avert our eyes from the skies for just long enough for one button press, to vote for our favorite astronomer!

  25. 25.   KaiYeves Says:

Don’t worry, I think your site rocks no matter what.

  28. 28.   Laguna Says:

Now Pharyngula takes the lead with 51%.
Bad Astronomy is behind with 34%.
The others? Not even worth to notice!

  29. 29.   Barton Paul Levenson Says:

I voted for ya, BA, but at this point Pharyngula is way ahead.
