I’m giving a talk in Boulder tonight and Friday

I posted this the other day, but I messed up the posting and I don’t think very many people saw it, so I’m reposting it.

On Thursday (tonight!) Feb. 28 and Friday Feb. 29 at 19:30 (Mountain time), I will be giving my "Seven Ways a Black Hole Can Kill You" talk at Fiske Planetarium in Boulder, CO. This is my first talk here in my new hometown, so I’m pretty excited! They have details online, and directions to Fiske too.

I actually put this talk together several years ago when I was at Sonoma State University, since we did a lot of work on education using black holes. But I’ve updated it to reflect what I learned writing the black holes chapter of my upcoming book, Death from the Skies.

In honor of this event, I have added a calendar to the blog listing BA events. You can get to it on every page of the blog; it’s listed as "Events" in the upper right just below the BA logo. And yes, I totally stole this from Rebecca when I saw she had done it.

I hope to see you there!

I thought the the one and only way a black hole could kill you was by coming into contact with one.

    Dude. Webcast.

Will you be covering, “CERN accidentally creates one and it eventually devours the Earth?” ;-)

Huh. Nice calendar thing. Google folks will always keep surprising me with their simple innovations…

I remember your seven ways talk! I had watched it on that program thingie… Forgot the name.

Heh. QD, that’s out of my hands. And besides, if I webcast it, who would pay me to come give it at a local museum or planetarium?

You should come do your presentation at the Fleischmann here in Reno. In payment, we’ll let you stooge about in our casinos. All that math you had in college should help you win at Blackjack, right?

Seeing as how I’m in fort collins, it’s tempting to drive down and see the BA speak… but I doubt I’ll be able too. Boulder’s close enough to be tempting, but too far to be practical :(

    How about audio only? ;-)

With a little more warning I might have been able to swing the Friday session. I live in Lone Tree outside of Denver, so the drive to Boulder is no problem, just too short of notice to make it happen though.

I like the description on the like. Being “fried by exotic radiation.” Now if only Boulder weren’t so darn far away from the East Coast…

Yea! Audio only! I mean, make it available maybe only a month later or something. It’d be great for folks like me who can’t hitchhike to Boulder. :P

Fiske Planetarium…that’s where I got my start in the lecturing/show writin’ bidness…

Got married there, too, 30 years ago this summer.

Hope you have/had a great time, Phil! It’s a place dear to my heart.

Yeah! Webcast it! Put it up on iTunes with your Q&BA podcast series (which I hope you’ll start making more of soon)! Or YouTube, or something!

(…….. and while you’re at it, I wish you’d put the rest of your YouTube stuff on iTunes, so I can get them automatically via my subscription.)

I vote for video. I wanna see your smiling face, BA. Audio is good as far as it goes, but it’s not the whole enchilada. You remind me of Neil Tyson in that way – you both need to be seen in action to get the full effect of your enthusiasm.

Ah, Fiske Planetarium and Summers-Bosch Observatory… what fond memories I have of being a TA there. All those frigid winter nights under the stars (with 7 arcsecond seeing!), snow covering the patio. Those were the days (and nights).

I think Andrew Hamilton and Mitch Begelman occasionally give black hole talks at Fiske, so you are in illustrious company. Break a leg.

I just got back from it. I thought it was awesome. It started out pretty simple, but got much more interesting as you went on.

You should give more talks at Fiske before I graduate.

I just saw it too. Wonderful talk, thanks for taking advantage of Fiske. I think you can expect to be swarmed by the skeptic’s meetup tomorrow (just a heads up).

Thanks for the talk BA. I was there and I thought you did an excellent job.

I saw the talk last night, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great job, and I look forward to perhaps seeing more of your talks (if you do any) at Fiske.
