My friend Amanda Bauer just got her PhD in astronomy! W00t! She’s at UT Austin, and you may know her better as astropixie.
She is very cool and deserving and I’m sure all you BABLoggees who read her blog will go over there and wish her well. We have another young scientist — and one who likes to write about it! — in the fold.
Yay!

She’s an elitist now.
Congratulations to her.

I am so bummed that I got my degree in biology. I would so have a PhD by now if I did physics.

Allow me to interrupt with my ego and declare on a side note that I delivered my master thesis in cosmology today! Yay me!
Now all that remains is the Oral Exam of Doom in three weeks and I can consider myself officially educated. Wow.

With a name like that I totally envisioned her applying thumbscrews to various celestial objects yelling “WHERE IS THE SECRET OF THE UNIVERSE????”

Kristin, congrats! Is it online someplace where it can be read? And are you heading on to the Phd?

thank you thank you thank you!!!
what an absolutely amazing feeling! not only the satisfaction of the accomplishment, but the clarity of my mind finally connecting all the pieces together from all the things i’ve learned and studied over the last many years!
just wow!

It don’t seem fair–less than a dozen comments about a REAL Scientist making it big time–er–make it two real scientists. and over a hundred comments about some loony who wouldn’t know authentic science it if bit him on his tin-foil-covered hat!
I think we need to even up things a bit–
Here goes:

Whew!
As a recovering grad student, I think I can appreciate all you went through.
You’ve made it!
My hat is off to the both of you!

Oh my, now I’m all blushing and stuff! Thank you guys! (And this is how long it took me to recover from not sleeping last week - I didn’t even surf the net for three days!)
Phil, as magnificent a subject as astronomy is, I will not be pursuing a PhD after my master degree, since I will not have the grades and I’m satisfied with having reached my maximum level of… well, educated-ness.
Even so, I’ve kept the promise to myself and reached this great goal, and the fact that I cannot reach all the way up to the level of the scientist has only given me all the more respect for them. I hereby promise to make good use of my critical thinking; that, I think, is the most precious lesson learned these six years as a student. And yes, I lived in woo-land before university, so it has indeed saved me.
As for your question of whether my thesis is online to read, yes it is (webpage link), but please don’t expect the world’s most astonishing piece of scientific writing. Other than the fact that I have a Phil Plait quote to open chapter 1, obviously.
Oh, and of course, I bow down to Dr. Astropixie! Congratulations!
