The Cat Herder said:
> 1) That Jesse Helms died on the Fourth of July surely established and affirmed his greatness as a conservative in our Republican sphere;

Or it could be said the second Great thing for our country that happened on July 4th. Pick your spin.

@Tyler

"Yes, but England was the driving force behind colonization and subjection of distant lands.. just as they always were in the past, as in the cases of Ireland, Scotland, India, etc.

Besides, it’s really hard to hate the Scottish or the Irish. They’re just cool folks."

Thanks for the compliment!

Though, on the other hand, we Irish and the Scottish made up a disproportionate amount of the forces of the Empire...

Oh god...moonbats celebrating the 4th of july. You just couldn't stop whining about 2000 & 2004 election results for one day could ya? Look, Bush is not the anti-christ. You think you can do better, run for office will ya? I am looking forward to november -- finally, the wishy-washy liberals will have to DEFEND an incompetent president, instead of attack one <sly grin>

@Matt

"Not quite! To be technical the United Kingdom did not exist until the 1800 Act of Union. The United States won its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain."

I've never heard "Kingdom of Great Britain" used officially before. The text of the 1707 Act of Union only refers to the "United Kingdom of Great Britain". That makes sense to me, as an act of 'Union' results in the parties concerned being 'United'.

@Dave Hall: I lost the spelling bee in 3rd grade for spelling it independance. It really pissed me off at the time, but the up-side was that I never got it wrong after that. Oh wait, you spelled it both ways. Never mind, it must be a typo.

Since the Fourth of July is my birthday, I agree, l focus on the good things about the government and how great we our stated ideals are, can gripe the rest of the year. As for September 17th, blah, I agree with Brian, the day John Hancock signed the declaration of independence is the true start of our country... Before then we were still trying to reconcile, After King Georges October 1775 ultimatum reached our shores, there was no turning back. While we should celebrate Constitution Day, we were still the same country even though we ditched the Articles of Confederation... August 29th and/or February 3rd are just as Important as September 17th, if not more so since they caused what happened on September 17th, 1787...

Also, don't you all remember the big to do on September 17th, 1987???

John Keller Says:
Forget the creationists or theocrats, both our political parties should read and follow the Declaration of Independence.

Nice thought, but remember the Declaration of independance is a justification for the anti-government actions of irate colonials who, for the most part considered themselves oppressed.

Hell, I'd really like them to read and follow the Constitution which was designed to PREVENT government oppression. That is until power-mad demagogues aided by a compliant news media and a complacent public erode the very protections our founders established.

In my opinion, we should also celebrate September 17.
Any guesses why?

Hey Tyler! The British are fantastic. If I had to live outside the U.S., I'd live there. (Actually, I did for a while, and it wouldn't take much to convince me to go back.)

True and all, but I like to think that July 4th is the one day of the year where I'm allowed to ignore everything that's wrong and just think about the good things about the US. It gives me the strength to put up with our very own mad king George III the other 364.

I do appreciate that we celebrate our nation's beginning as July 4th, 1776. Not the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, which would effectively commemorate a bloody war, nor the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which would commemorate England's formal acknowledgement of our statehood. Instead, we commemorate the day a roomful of people put forth their best effort to quietly demonstrate, with the forcefulness of a Euclidian proof, that we should be allowed to seek our own fates. We've come a long way since then, but our roots are earnestly intellectual. It's good to remember that.

Yes, it's time once again to celebrate insurgents who allied with a hostile nation to gain independence from an occupying overseas power. A power, led by a man named George no less (Thx ARealGirl), whose troops were known to shoot unarmed civilians.

Happy Independence Day!
