Mythbustin’ the Moon Hoax: Part III, the video

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, the Mythbusters, were at Comic Con last week. They did a panel discussion of the show (moderated by Bill Prady, one of the producers of The Big Bang Theory), and were great (as usual).

They started off their panel with a bang — a fantastic trailer for their upcoming episode on the Moon Hoax!

Coooooooollllll. Love the music. The show airs August 27.

I got to hang out with Adam and some of the Discovery Channel crew at Comic Con, and they were as nice, funny, warm, and charming as you’d imagine. And I’m not just sucking up; they really were a fun group.

[More pix are here in my Flickr Comic Con set. ARealGirl has many pix too!]

Adam made sure my friend A and I got front row seats for their panel, which was totally cool. And if that weren’t enough… during the panel, Adam and Jamie were asked what myths they’ve wanted to investigate but haven’t had the time too. Adam, bless his heart, didn’t even hesitate: he said it was trying to see stars in the daytime, and then said (on stage and everything) that it came from "his good friend, Phil Plait, who is sitting right over here."

Yes, I totally got a shout-out from Adam freakin’ Savage. Comic Con was like that. Awesome from start to finish.

And I have at least one more story to tell… but it’s best for a Friday. Stay tuned. :-)

When I retire from the USAF, my daughter informed me that I would be NOTHING to her unless I got a job as an assistant on Mythbusters. Think you and your friend Adam could at least arrange an interview? :P

That said, I am really, really looking forward to that episode!

I find it nice that they gave the show a serious treatment instead of their usual funny approach.

The episode will do nothing to stop true Hoax Believers, but should help convince those sitting on the fence as whether it was a hoax or not.

Working at the Mythbusters has to be the coolest job ever. I can’t wait for that show. Hopefully it will open the eyes of anybody who thinks there is the slightest chance that NASA faked the whole thing.

Moon hoax believers who do not know the contents of the show are going to see this trailer and think to themselves, “Finally, Mythbusters is going to expose NASA!” I can not wait. Phil, you better get a credit.

    Nasa fake a moon landing?

Seeing how the historical record of the shuttle safety and money management programs have progressed over the years, I seriously doubt that this government agency could pull the wool over the eyes of so many people for so long. it would take what, thousands of people to pull it off and make sure nothing screws up the secret kept for what, 40 years now.

I believe that the human race has been to the moon, I mean, how cool is that, we did something that you just have to stop and stand in awe and feel proud of having been there for this and say we did that. This one thing for the first time ever in the human race.

For those who don’t chose to belive, close your windows, drapes, blinds whatever and stay in the dark.

My future is bright and full of hope to the next great leap we chose to take on and again I can say, I was there.

btw. to those who said we couldn’t have done it without computers, every heard of a slipstick.

    Something I’d like to know.

In the Mythbusters trailer there is a brief clip of the Apollo 12 Lunar Module in orbit above the lunar surface, shot just after separation from the Command Module. The same footage has appeared in many documentaries and was used in opening credits for Star Trek Enterprise. This footage has ALWAYS been BACKWARDS! Can someone tell me why? Please? It drives me nuts every time I see it. I know it’s petty but please, somebody, anybody, whenever this is next duped from the original 16mm film FLIP IT RIGHT WAY AROUND!

It’s almost as bad as the movie Apollo 13 using the paint scheme from the non-flight engineering test article Saturn V used to test facilities integration at the Kennedy Space Centre instead of the actual Apollo 13 Saturn V. Details are important.

    End of space-geek rant.

I have read about the reasons these people give for conspiracy. You don’t even have to “know” about physics. Any semi-experienced photographer will notice those about photography are silly claims. Very silly. These people have never used a manual camera, it seems, or taken a picture with a sufficiently wide-angle lens.

  33. 33.   Your Name's Not Bruce? Says:
    August 1st, 2008 at 10:57 am

Flopped left to right. Look at the Ascent Stage of the LM. Its design is asymmetrical. The propellant tanks are different sizes, so one side extends farther from the spacecraft centreline than the other. If you’re looking at from the front, face on as we see it in the clip, the larger tank should be on the right side. In this clip it’s on the left. You can also see that one of the antennae is also on the “wrong” side. Occasionally you’ll see the same reversal in reprints of the photo of the Apollo 11 ascent stage taken from Columbia just before docking. But the Apollo 12 clip I have never seen the right way around.

Phbbbbt! Front row seats! Blech. I got on line 1.5 hours before the panel, and didn’t get in — along with, by my estimate, 4000 other people! I hope they come back to Comic Con next year — and get the biggest room there. They deserved Hall H, or room 6CDEF at least! 6B was just too small for them!

Any chance that someone taped the whole presentation? So those 4000 of can see what we missed?

Recently, a series of pictures were taken from approximately 31 million miles away shows the moon between the camera and the Earth. The Earth appears to be many times larger than the moon. So why when we we allegedly were on the moon does the pic of the Earth shows it to be no larger than the moon appears to be from the Earth?

Joe, why does the sun look moon sized when seen from the earth? Are you suggesting that the sun is the same size as the moon?
Having said that I thought the earth looked about 3 or 4 times the apparent size of the moon when viewed from the moon? I wouldn’t be surprised that the lens used on the camera and the aperture helped make the earth look smaller that it was too.
