Galapagos Wrapup »

Skepodcasts

I don’t think the post title is actually a word, but it’s my blog, and, with apologies to Eric Cartman, I do what I want.

I did two skeptic podcast interviews right before the Galapagos trip: one with James Randi and the Skeptics Guide to the Universe crew (with a direct download here) — the interview with Randi and me starts at about 32:30 in, but you should listen to the whole thing — and the second with Derek and Swoopy (obswoop: Mmmmmm, Swoopy) at Skepticality (direct download here).

We talked about a lot of stuff on both ‘casts, including the JREF (natch), private space travel, and other skeptical things. If you like those podcasts, subscribe to them! The more people who listen, the merrier, and the better the world will be.

I love Skepticality – I’ve been a listener since 2005, when I was amazed to discover people actually talking about all this skeptical stuff!

I listen to them both daily! I pull this feat off by downloading back episodes and loading my old 4G iPod mini to the gills!

Speaking of being skeptical, this article about LHC seems to be very poorly written:

SGU rocks; never miss it. They used to be more “adult”, but lately have avoided using (eg) the “F” word. Too bad, I related more…thought it projected a more uninhibited, contemporary atmosphere. Guess they’re trying to relate to a younger audience and are afraid of being criticized for “swearing”. Wait a min. A younger audience would love it. Screw the uptight parents. Release Rebecca.

Skepticality isn’t as frequent as it used to be but it is still essential listening. SGU is banged out week after week and is consistently great. Over the years they’ve got better and better. Making Rebecca a regular was a masterstroke. Oh, and don’t forget the SETI Institute’s Are We Alone. Another brilliant skeptical podcast. Our BAB overlord is a regular. Be warned though, when Seth and Phil get together it is puns at 25 paces.

I make a point of playing my iPod in my Honda Element when I ferry my impressionable youngest daughter and (especially) her friends (one of whom is in a fundy church) to give them a little taste of reality. I like it when they swear, ’cause the kids get a thrill! They don’t get to hear stuff like that often.

Phil Plait, the creator of Bad Astronomy, is an astronomer, lecturer, and author. After ten years working on Hubble Space Telescope and six more working on astronomy education, he struck out on his own as a writer. He's written two books, dozens of magazine articles, and 12 bazillion blog articles. He is a skeptic and fights the abuse of science, but his true love is praising the wonders of real science.
