Dragon*Con

In just a few short hours I’ll be on a plane winging my way to Dragon*Con 2008 in Atlanta. Woohoo! D*C is a huge con, with 40,000+ fans of scifi, comics, fantasy, and other flights of fancy. I’m going as part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, but I’m also participating in the Skeptic Track (talks and panels about critical thinking) as well as Space and some science fiction. Kevin Grazier and I will be rehashing our Science of Science Fiction panel we did at Comic Con, for example.

If you’re in the Atlanta area and want to go, check out the Skeptic track schedule, or the more complete schedule listed in the pocket guide. Skepchick has more, and there’s a Star Trek track I’d like to see, too.

Loads of stars will be there, too, including Nathan Fillion, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, James Hong (indeed!), and a gazillion others. Skeptics attending include Michael Shermer, Richard Saunders, Randi, and a bunch more too. My friends astronomers Bill Keel and Pamela Gay will be in attendance too.

This will rawk. Oh baby.

I went to D*C back in 2006 and had a great time. Here is the proof. I hope the wireless is up to the task of my blogging and Twittering!

I hope to see some BABloggees there. If you’re around, drop by my talks and panels. Let’s spread the love.

    Jewel Staite

Someone I know said that Jewel Staite was being used on SG-Atlantis too much.

I immediately had him submitted for psychological evaluation. Too much? WTF?

Man, I wish my TDY schedule didn’t interfere with things that I’d much rather be doing. Such is the life of a slave to the government…

Next year you should try to hit up P.A.X. More people attending, great atmosphere, your net access is pretty much guaranteed, and it is closer to you.

Watch your language, Andre! That’s not necessary or even remotely helpful.
    Have a GREAT time, Phil!

I am EXTREMELY jealous. I went in 2007 for the first time and LOVED IT. The guest list this year looks even better than last year’s. Take lots of pictures! (Like you need me to say it.)

I’ll be at Dragon Con and Skeptics in the Pub. It would probably be illegal if I didn’t since I live in Atlanta. This will be my first Dragon Con and I can’t wait to take my kids to the Star Trek room. My 5 year old loves TNG and we have been watching them for the last few weeks getting ready. I’m new to the Skeptics community and I’m looking forward to hopefully meetingt some of the people I’ve been reading about. I just stared reading the Bad Astronomy book. My son asked me a few weeks ago why the sky was blue, and now I can actually answer him.

@Quiet Desperation – Too much? I don’t get that either. Jewel Staite rocks! And she’s so nice and down to earth.

Have fun Phil! You’re certainly getting a lot of travel in this summer! I wish I could also, but I’ll have to settle for hearing about it on your blog and seeing your pics.

  17. 17.   Overstroming Says:
    August 28th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

A few short hours eh? Where do I get them? I’ve got dinner with my in-laws later. It will take hours and I’d prefer if they were the short kind.

Finally, you’re in MY neighborhood. OK! SO! I don’t have to be at work until 11pm tomorrow night(Friday), so, assuming there are any tickets left, I’ll see you, maybe around the 1 pm time slot. Can only stay until around 9pm, but that should be enough of a SciFi and Phil fix,,,

Later Mr. Pres(man, I wish leaders with IQs higher than 130 could actually get elected,ah well, maybe in a thousand years, or so).

Oh yea… THIS year you go to Dragon Con. Couldn’t go last year. You’re avoiding me, aren’t you? Hmm??

Make sure you ask Derek or Swoopy (mmmm… Swoopy – I’m single… I’m allowed to mmmm) for something from me. If it arrived.

    Have fun.

Oh, LOTS of girls go to Dragon Con. Actual sci fi loving girls.

Check out the Brobdingnagian Bards if you can, they’re pretty damn funny.

    Have a blast!

This con must’ve grown by leaps and bounds… I remember going to one back in the early 90′s, and was pretty much bored out of my mind! If you see any of the staff from Games Quarterly in attendance, tell them I said hi.

    Oh, Frak!

I thought I had given myself plenty of time to get to your talk yesterday. Left Cartersville(42 miles) at 10:45 am, but by the time I found a parking place, picked up my tickets and found the room you were talking in, it was 2:40 PM. Frak!!! Couldn’t even get in to see Randi, as his room was filled to overflow,,,
There were a LOT of people at this Con, enough to pack the Hilton, Sheraton and Marriot hotels. Public parking for a mile around was full.
You guys(Phil and Randi) are just getting WAY too popular,,,Oh, wait, maybe that’s a GOOD thing,,,

    Maybe next time, Phil,,,

    GAry 7
PS I DID get to hear the editor of Skeptical Inquirer do his talk about Lake monsters,,,and the costumes people were wearing were,,,interesting.

I know he is probably having a great time in Atlanta, but with the political news going on you wouldn’t be able shut him up. Well at least we do not have, this blog for science only posters.

I had an absolute BLAST listening to you speak today at D-con! You and the other wonderful skeptics have made this convention a MILLION times more appealing. Since I’m not able to travel to the BIG skeptic gatherings… being able to partake in this was an absolutely amazing experience for me.
Thank you for signing my book,… and I can’t wait till your new creation comes out! See ya’ next year at the Con (I hope!).
