Big Picture: The Sun »

UFOny

When I wrote my book, I was very, very careful to include lots of information about how unlikely a lot of the cosmic catastrophe scenarios are. For example, the odds of a black hole getting near enough to the solar system to disrupt the orbits of any planets, even the outer ones, are so small that it almost certainly hasn’t happened in the 4.55 billion year lifetime of the Sun!

Still, I imagine some people are prone to being scared, and if that’s the case, the terrifying economic situation, plus reading my book, plus the chance of getting abducted by aliens, is just too much for some folks.

I’d pity those poor, poor people. Still, there but for the grace of God… depending on how the election goes I may be right there with them.

Death from the Skies! A little too literally.

    Phil,

    You have the most compelling photographic evidence of a UFO that I have ever seen. Judging by their literary interests they are also highly intelligent!

    That picture above reminds me of the British Rail flying saucer design that was reported in the British media, back in the late 70′s.

    If you didn’t hear, a “Mothership” from the “Federation of Light” is supposed to appear in the skies today and remain visible for three days. This is from a very reliable source, a lady that channels messages from the “Federation of Light”.

    It’s cloudy here in the Vancouver area, so I can’t see what’s going on up there. So, if anyone from sunnier climes can let me know if you see anything…

    [...] His first book, Bad Astronomy, was engaging and informative. I have every reason to suspect that his next book will be even more awesome. I just wish he’d let us know what it’s called, or even give us some kind of hint at what it’s about. [...]

    OK, I was fooled until I read that one of the rioters was from Downers Grove. Sheesh. I need to get out, more. These kinds of things usually only come out in April, for some reason.

    OTOH, if someone really does have the inside track on a ship leaving this planet, let me know.

    Phil, your Bad Astronomy book is awesome! I even learned a couple things in the first section, and I thought I was pretty well edumacated. Yeah, I ordered the new one, too. Can’t wait.

    @MichaelL,

    Ok, I’ll bite…

    Who is your “reliable source?” I think you’ve been tricked.

    Here’s another thought. If you are not sure about odds, you should become increasingly concerned as time passes and nothing happens. Illustration: the odds are 1:100. You made 99 experiments and nothing happend. Well, you think, it didn’t happen in the row of previously taken attempts. Nothing happens if I try once more…

    So your book is 15 feet tall? Does that still qualify for Amazon’s free shipping?

    Didn’t you know, spaceships visit Vancouver all the time. Everyone knows they only come on rainy days and stay above the clouds. I know because my grass starts growing faster when they are overhead.

    @Greg:
    Her name is Blossom Goodchild. She’s been in ‘communication’ with these aliens, but it seems I was a day off. These spaceships will appear tomorrow, which is lucky for those of us on the West Coast because the weather is supposed to clear tomorrow.

    Look, with a name like ‘Blossom Goodchild, how much more reliable do you need?

    (Google her name, and you’ll get all the ‘facts’ you need to prepare for this mass sighting.)

    I for one, welcome our ‘Federation of Light’ Overlords, along with Ambassador Blossom.

    They mistook the book for an intelligent lifeform, as it has more valuable content than most peoples brain’s.

    Sounds like a character from a G-rated Bond film.

    I wonder, if you’re sitting on the loo and a microscopic black hole passes through the earth from the other side and zips right through you–would that be Death from Below?

  22. 22.   MichaelL Says:
    October 13th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

    @JoeSmith:
    Possibly, but one thing I know for sure, it would be Death From Uranus!

    Since you wrote the Foreword to “The Saucer Fleet,” are you dragging me along on your coattails? Even if not deliberate, thanks for the plug.

    PS – the actual release date isn’t available yet, but at least it’s at the publisher!

    @CanadianLeigh:

    The aliens go to BC alright, and it is for the grass, but not of the variety you grow so well in your yard! :^)

    Greetings from the BC Peace, home of the annual “UFO & Cattle Mutilation Convention & BBQ” for the last 27 years…

    I don’t know about alien abductions, but here in San Antonio we get an occasional alien home-invasion. We got lots of aliens here. None I’ve seen come by UFO though.

  26. 26.   Thomas Says:

    Bill Hicks was right when he pointed out that aliens traversing the gulf of interstellar space, probably aren’t as smart as we like to think they are since they seem to only bother deliverance types.

    Maybe we’re being visited by hillbilly aliens.

  27. 27.   M Says:

    I saw a cartoon once of a UFO landing in front of two hillbilly types. The caption was something like “It’s uncanny. How do they know we are not credible?’ I thought it was hilarious.

    Crap… I guess my friend Blossom was wrong…

    That’s hilarious. I live in Bolingbrook about 2 miles from Clow International UFO space port. I gotta find out who is writing this; think I’ve found a new fellow skeptic/drinking buddy.
