I usually like to keep things light on Fridays, but this is too good to keep until Monday. Moriel Schotttlander has written up an account of how the Shuttle Columbia astronaut Ilan Ramon’s personal diary survived (more or less) the disintegration of the Shuttle.
A curator of the Israeli Museum called this event "a miracle". It’s hard to know if he was being literal or not, but Moriel does an excellent job showing exactly how this is no miracle, and in fact might even be expected.
I’ll note the diary landed in mud, making the pages very difficult to examine and read. That’s not terribly miraculous. And, of course, if it’s a miracle that the diary made it, what does that say about the deaths of seven astronauts and the destruction of their billion-dollar machine?

Calling things “a miracle” has become de rigueur in L.A.’s local “news” broadcasts.
The good news is, the expression has become so overused that I can’t believe anyone attaches any religious connotation to it. Except, of course, for the people who see Jeebus in oil stains on the road, or fungus growing on trees, of which there are many in L.A. Sighhhh…..

I agree. How offensive to assert that an all powerful magical being can find the time to intervene in order to save a book, but not a human life.
On another note, it is always amazing what survives seemingly totally destructive conditions.

a) What rabbi, Tim? The person quoted is a curator at the Israel Museum.
b) The quote was (from Universe Today, linked from the Schottlander article): “It’s almost a miracle that it survived — it’s incredible,” Israel Museum curator Yigal Zalmona said. “There is no rational explanation for how it was recovered when most of the shuttle was not.”
I agree that the Schottlander article provides a compelling case for why the diary might have survived Columbia’s destruction. But barring that, on a basic intuitive level, it’s pretty darn mind-boggling that a book survived the destruction of a spacecraft and came, mostly intact, back down to Earth.
As kuhniggit points out, the word “miracle” has undergone a severe devaluation, and is often used in a context outside of the literal meaning of “a direct intervention by God or other supernatural forces.” I see no reason, given the quote, to say that he must have meant it in the literal sense.

I would think beings he is a Rabi that he probably meant it in a biblical sense, but at the same time miracle has become almost synonymous with highly unlikely or a wonder. While it explained why this is possibly expected, to an average lay person something falling to the earth at high speed and high temperatures would think paper being flammable and fragile would not survive. I would just personally take the whole statement with a grain of salt. No sense in getting worked up about something we cant prove or disprove. Though if he really did mean god did it, then by all means I would say poke at him.

The death of the seven astronauts- and particulary Ilan Ramon’s- came as a shock for the public in Israel.
Ramon was the first Israli astronaut and as such he became a source for pride and hope for many. In the time preceeding his flight, Ramon toured Israel and met with many Israeli students and youths discussing the shuttle’s mission and objectives, and sharing his excitement towards it.
The phrase ‘A miracle’ concerning the diary should be seen as it is- merely a phrase. There’s no religious festivity around it- it’s just a way to express the condolences that such a find brings to all who waited for Ilan’s safe return.
All in all, I don’t think thre’s a need to make a fuss around a phrase said in times of sorrow.

You realize that this type of post is one reason why so many people think skeptics are cynics? It’s a damned turn of phrase.
“It’s a miracle that x happened” is an extremely common idiom that means “the likelihood of x happening is very remote, and I am/we are very glad that it happened anyway.”
By way of example, I once spun out on a freeway at 80mph with a large truck immediately behind me. The whole event must have taken only a few seconds, but somehow — through some combination of random chance and well-trained reactions — I ended up facing the right way, on the side of the road, with just barely enough room for the truck to have passed me safely.
It’s a miracle that there was absolutely no damage, except to my pride.
That doesn’t mean I believe in “real” miracles, it just means I accept the unlikelihood of what happened, and I’m pleased with the results.

However, how can one be a skeptic and NOT be cynical?

I always attribute the word ‘miracle’ to something which has low odds of occurring; not the intervention of some god or another. And, why not? most ‘miracles’ have to do with things such as cancer remission or survival of some terrible accident. However, when a low probability event is combined with an even lower probability event such as ‘godditit’, I make an exception I say NFW.

God Granting Miracles
A religious man is on top of a roof during a great flood. A man comes by in a boat and says, “Get in, get in!” The religious man replies, “No, I have faith in God, he will grant me a miracle.”
Later, the water is up to his waist and another boat comes by and the guy tells him to get in again. He responds that he has faith in god and that god will send him “a miracle.”
With the water at about chest high, another boat comes to rescue him, but he turns down the offer again because “God will grant me a miracle.”
With the water at chin high, a helicopter throws down a ladder and the crew tell him to get in, but, mumbling with the water in his mouth, he again turns down the request for help for the faith of God.

I just got to the part of Death from the skies where you point out the possibility that bacteria may have survived a fall to earth, so this really brings in some perspective.

IIRC, there was a student experiment on board Columbia, and the computer that had recorded the data was found among the debris. While it was completely mangled, the hard drive inside was intact enough that the data could be read. Was this also a miracle?

Puh-leeze. So many people use words without knowing what they mean. Don’t be one of them. “Miracle – n. – any event or situation beyond the comprehension of the observer. See magic.”
It’s not in the dictionary in just that way, but there’s always a babbler around when it’s used. “Unpredictable” does not mean either “impossible” or “random”. Neither does not knowing how something happened mean it’s actually rare.

Ever notice how “miracles” are almost always associated with some kind of disastrous event? In the basic form of Toddler Survives Fire That Claims Six, we are near daily beaten over the head with the notion that in order for one to be unexpectedly spared several must expectedly perish.
I submit that it would be a miracle if all survived, walked away arm in arm while joking about such a near thing and asking bystanders where the nearest saloon was.
Ever notice how it is only terror and close calls that light a fire under the lazy asses of the true believers? Well I have and the prospect is unsettling. Still, I relax with my own notion of miracle–that almost everyone gets through almost every day almost intact. Now that is miraculous!

- granny surviving a building collapse that kills hundreds
- a school massacre where the gunman misses a teen but kills all her friends
- surviving cancer after years of chemo and radiation
- a 50-1 long shot wins a horse race and you win a few bucks

Nitpick over using the word “miracle” = storm in a tea-cup.
Pretty remarkable that the diary – & other experiments – survived not too badly damaged. Peoples opinions on the significance of this, well people do have opinions and rights to express ‘em whether they do so well or poorly.
Its interesting enough but hardly worth making this much of a fuss about.
In My Humble Opinion Naturally.
‘Columbia’ was a great loss – for the ship and its crew and the negative effects it’s had.
As for Ramon, well I’m not too sure, I do know that he took part in an illegal if successful Israeli attack on Iraq, which would have killed people – people just doing their jobs. I dislike him for that.
I think it would be a good thing for Peace if Iraq had had nukes -or if Iran gets them now. Why? Because that would deter the USA or Israel from attacking them and the MAD theory, mad as it sounds, does seem to work. Eg. Cold war stayed cold, no more wars between India and Pakistan.
If Israel hadn’t sent Ramon among others to bomb Osirak, then maybe, just maybe, there wouldn’t be any US invasion and occupation of Iraq going on so badly now.
I don’t know whether Ramon viewed things in a different light afterwards or whether he may have had some positive (or negative) influence on his nations direction after the flight. So much we’ll never know. ;-(
One thing that I would like to see would be a joint Palestinean-Israeli spaceflight to build co-operation and understanding between them. Maybe?
Well if that’s too ambitious how about a joint American-Chinese flight (maybe even with Russia taking part too) – & how about sending that co-operative flight to Mars or a near-Earth Asteroid?

Religion as we’ve noted here has effectively lost the meaning behind the word “miracle” which has morphed into meaning just “something highly unlikely or flukey” rtaher than anything divinely caused and in violation of what is actually possible. (eg. From walking on water, raising the dead to surviving against high odds or even, shudder,. kicking or hitting a ball in a precise way to achieve sporting points or a lesser team beating a better one at some game.)
Science has lost the word “theory” which common parlance has transformed from meaning a precise scientific hypothesis tested and backed by evidneceand able tobe tested further into something a synonym of the word guess or idea or speculation.
I wonder which field is worse off for their respective loss?
These linguistic shifts in meaning while very regrettable abnd diminishing our langaguge seems hard to fight.
One suggestion : Change the term Theory to Law insuch things as Evolution -an idea not, btw. original with me.

Seems there are a lot of people defending that curator by saying he said “almost a miracle” or that he meant the term “miracle” in some casual, non-religious way.
Well, OK, perhaps he did. But he used the term to indicate the high inmprobability of the survival of the diary. As the page to which Phil linked shows, it is not unlikely at all.
Quite the contrary. It is extraordinarily unlikely that no parts of the diary at all would make it to the ground in a legible state. Now, it might be a lucky find, in terms of being a relatively small piece of debris in a large area, but that is a completely separate issue.
So, the curator was quite definitely wrong.

I see your point, but I must take issue with your suggestion. A Theory is not a Law; those are two mutually exclusive terms in science. The sad fact that parts of our society insist on confusing the public about what a theory is (and isn’t) shouldn’t cause us to change the way we think of things in science. A Law is a law (conservation of mass is a law, conservation of energy is a law, Newton’s laws of motions are laws, etc). A theory is a collections of laws, facts, observations, explanations and processes. The theory of gravity is an explanation that includes, within it, a bunch of laws (like Newton’s laws of gravity, parts of it). Those terms are entirely different.
What we should try to do, in my opinion at least, is make sure that the public knows a theory is not just “a vague idea”, and that science and the scientific method is what we use to discern between reality and.. well, crap. People who think the theory of evolution is “just a theory” are usually just repeating what others told them. They don’t usually actually think things through — that’s the problem.
I think that we should get people to stop being so “afraid” of science. Science seems to be this “mysterious black box” that only the geniuses, nerds and geeks of the world are really capable of understanding. So if only ‘geniuses’ can understand it, then the average people just puts his trust on whoever he thinks has authority.
The argument of what is and isn’t a miracle, or what people mean or don’t mean by it is interesting, but I think it’s besides the point. These type of “can’t have a rational explanation” remarks are just adding to people’s mistrust about science, specifically when this phrase is coming from an authority figure. The curator might not be a *scientitic* authority to us, but he *is* an authority to the public (and was presented as such).
The general public might — sometimes, perhaps, in occasions – take it literally, as if science isn’t good enough to understand this, or as if no one has a clue about how things work.
Even if they won’t think that it is truly a “miracle” from God, or Yahweh, or the FSM, they might just file this as “unsolved X-File type weirdness-of-nature” in their minds. And that – THAT – is why I wrote the article. I was *hoping* people would see that if you just ask the questions, it’s not that hard to get to a logical explanation and *understand* things. Not just file them away and dismiss them as things they will never understand.
