I am not so much a baker. I’ve made cakes in the past that have been pretty good, though I use box mix. I can make excellent brownies (being at 1700 meters elevation makes that non-trivial, by the way). But I know that if I were to try something difficult, like shaping a cake into something cool, it would be a disaster.
That’s why I have sympathy for these folks. I think they tried really hard, but maybe weren’t quite up to the task. They weren’t professionals, so I don’t think that snark is called for, but still. Yikes. They did post their cakes in public places, so they’re asking for it. And honestly, I wouldn’t have known what that last one was had it not been in the context of the others.
Mrs. BA is an excellent baker, and maybe I’ll ask her to make a cake like this for my birthday next year. If she makes one, I’ll post pictures, and it’ll be awesome. She’s done Spongebob, Zim, and Kenny cakes in the past, and they were very cool. Maybe it’s time to go 3D.
And if you want to try this yourself, this might help:

Awwww. We all have to start somewhere.
I’m not much of a cook, but I do like to bake. The whole decorating them elaborately gig is not my thing, though. Plain and simple, please.

That is so totally cool. I have been considering doing a Dr Who party this November (though the chaos in my extended family right now makes it a dicey proposition) and if I make it work, this cake would be a MUST!!!
Remember, November 23: Doctor Who turns 45!

Their cake might not have looked like a Dalek, but it sure bore an uncanny resemplance to those blobby things from the “Three Doctors” episode!

She’s done Spongebob
That wasn’t a cake. It was the real Spongebob. You monster.

ROFLM@O!!! That dalek looks like a pile of you know what!
However, it does not compare to the cake disaster I experienced… I ordered a large Ice Cream cake for my daughters birthday. At that age, she happened to love Barbie, so that was the theme. Dairy Queen happened to make a Barbie Ice Cream cake.
I ordered the biggest one. My friend, wisely suggested that the largest would be way too big. I called the DQ, and changed the order to a smaller size. Someone forgot to tell the person who programmed the computer that put the image on the cake…
Barbie ended up looking like a total skank crack w*ore. I thought my daughter would be devastated… she laughed harder than anyone!

You think 1700 m is bad – I remember living in Los Alamos and reading the instructions on the side of the box for High altitude (3000 – 6000 ft). “And what do you do at 7500 ft?????”
It has other odd things, like boiling spaghetti al dente in 20 min, the 1 h potato, and the 10 min soft boiled egg.

Why do I feel like I’ve read this before? In another previous life, perhaps? Or did you blog previously about cakewrecks? Ah well, notta matter… It’s just as silly the 2nd time ’round.

Right now I ca not see the picture and I am kind of wondering if I want to.(work does not allow most of the pictures and videos through.)

Now a couple of them looked structurally sound but I think they had major frosting issues. They might have been better served if they had used fondant like the Duff from Ace of Cakes. Hmmm if I’m ever rich maybe I’ll have him make me a Dalek cake. I’ll shall masticate…masticate it.
Sorry just had to.

I do bake a lot, but I’ve never been a big one for doing the massively decorated cakes (takes that much longer before you get to eat it). But, I might just have to give this a try.

@Kyle:
I think Phil has a rule about masticating on his blog….
October 27th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Yea…one bite is enough to exterminate said consumer with a heart attack. Talk about wrong
October 27th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Phil should have made it clear in that last post that while political posts may be seasonal, sci-fi is ALWAYS on the menu!

You know, the cakewrecks blog just did a post on Dalek cakes Saturday- I sort of assumed there would be a link to that post. You’d never think Daleks could look quite that bad…
October 27th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
The second cake didn’t look too bad for an amateur job.
October 27th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Wait wait wait wait wait wait…
Those swiss cake rolls. Those are real? I’m familiar with the Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls. But those… looked… magnificent.
I need a plane/boat/zeppelin/pogo ticket to Swissland immediately.

Oops- Checked in to see if my comment had passed moderation and realized that I missed the link this post was actually -about-. If you want to delete both of my comments (the previous and ths one), that’d be fine. I guess I’ll also point out that there’s some links at the bottom of the page to other awful geeky (sci-fi themed) cakes, as well as some very nicely done examples.

Oh the shame of doing a less than tradesman job of replicating these tacky, cheesy evil sci-fi shop-vacs. This obviously should have been a cheesecake to capture the spirit of the original.

Sadly, even those sorry Dalek cakes are beyond my cooking skills :/
October 28th, 2008 at 1:57 am
In fairness, anyone trying to buttercream a Dalek is already in a world of hurt (and using candies for the Dalek bumps was actually a pretty good idea). Thanks for thu link to the blog though. Bookmarked & sure to provide hours of fun.

I read the title of this entry, and before I saw that it was about Daleks, I assumed it was a cake that represented a giant asteroid striking the Earth. I think my new mission in life may be realising the dream of the Deep (Frosting) Impact cake.

I love the presenter’s accent!
