Obviously, I know there will be no disaster, astronomical or otherwise, in the year 2012. The conspiracy theorists are full of it, there is no Nibiru, it’ll be years after 2012 that solar activity (flares and such) will peak, and there is no alignment between the Earth and the Galactic core.
But that doesn’t stop Hollywood! They are making a movie called, simply, 2012, and I’m sure it’ll be filled to the brim with garbage. But… a trailer just came out, and it’s cool. I can’t resist a good disaster, especially a tsunami:
I disagree with the basic plot element of the movie, too: a worldwide disaster this large would never be able to be kept secret. Something big enough to wipe out all life would be something too big to cover up, especially just four years away. An asteroid impact, global warming, some wandering planet: we’d know about anything like that years in advance (and no melting ice cap is going to cause a flood four miles high as depicted in that trailer).
So: feh.
Amanda Peet is supposed to be in this movie, which is too bad. I love her stance against antivaxxers. But I guess she has to eat too.
Tip o’ the tin foil beanie to I Watch Stuff.

November 13th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
I highly doubt that anybody involved with this movie actually believes in its backstory. They probably just regard it as a good story to base a film on – and, let’s face it, it is.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Naaah, you’re overreacting this time, sorry. It’s a movie. Fun.
Alternative histories (be it future or past) in fiction are very popular as “what if” scenarios – and rightly so. They can help to explore sides of society/humanity/whatever-ty by exaggerating certain parts of it. Or even by making fun of things, or by being completely unrealistic.
Sure, there’s lots of very bad very unrealistic movies – but critisizing a movie simply for the lack of realism of its plot really is totally pointless.
There are some very good works of fiction that at least partially qualify as “conspiration theory”.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Amanda Peet is supposed to be in this movie, which is too bad. I love her stance against antivaxxers. But I guess she has to eat too.
An actor’s job is to perform in bad movies. Good actors occasionally get to star in great movies. I understand that. I’m a software programmer, I make my living writing bad applications, only occasionally I get to do something cool.
PS, I think you meant to say “I know there will be no global disaster, astronomical or otherwise, in the year 2012.” But I can hope you take my bet that there will be a plane crash, train crash, or hurricane sometime during 2012. =)
November 13th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
How do you KNOW there will be no disaster in 2012? There COULD be, you don’t KNOW there will or won’t be.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
That is a neat trailer…. I’ll treat this movie as I treated “The Day After Tomorrow”, “Deep Impact”, “Armageddon”, etc. – as interesting action flicks/distractions.
Hopefully, “2012″ will not have the gawdawful plot holes TDAT and DI had***. As interesting as the subject is for TDAT, there was soooooo my BS going on that I cannot watch it (even with Liv Tyler). DI only went overboard with the “if we run up this hill, we will be saved! Oh, and wasn’t it a shame that the thousands/millions of folks stuck in that giant traffic jam didn’t follow us!” baloney.
*** OK – there were a LOT of plot holes, True-Science ™ wise, but the makings of a good movie require us to suspend our sense of disbelief. I mean, I can enjoy MST3k regardless of the science, but insist on initializing a space station’s rotation *because* a shuttle is docking with it, and you’ve lost me 100%.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Yeah, I don’t really see how a movie having no basis in reality is a bad thing. It’s not like people can actually clone dinosaurs, invent an infinite improbability drive which causes a spaceship to spontaneously travel through every point in the universe almost instantaneously, or make a ring that makes you invisible and carries a part of the soul of an evil dictator. It’s just a story which someone thinks would make a good flick.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
whoops – I meant “Armageddon”, not TDAT with Ms. Tyler and the spinning space station…
November 13th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
It is Roland Emmerich, after all…
November 13th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Just out of curiousity… if all the ice on the Antarctic was to melt, how much higher would the oceans get? 10 feet, 10 meters? Everyone by now should know that the Northern Caps melting has no effect on the depth of the oceans (even though the beginning of Water World would tell us otherwise).
November 13th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I’d rather see a trailer for 2061 than 2012.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
“the Antarctic”? Whoops… to much WoW last night. “Antarctica” is what I meant.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
What about quintillion and quintillions of little ice particles striking the atmosphere?
November 13th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
I’ll suspend my Lewis Black-esque anger at conspiracy theorists/theories and watch this movie. I love me some visual destruction.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
The 2012ers are off by a year. Sarah Palin will not take office until January 2013.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Nice teaser but who knows if the movie will be any good. Once they get too far fetched, I have a hard time enjoying them anymore, like The Day After Tomorrow
November 13th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Scott-
Going to have to agree with you. Special effects and computer graphics have gotten much better over the years, but the directing, storyline, and acting of recent disaster movies have been as bad as ever. It almost ruins the awesome special effects which deserve better.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Bill,
But Palin will be elected in 2012.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Ok, I’m willing to play along with the “It’s just a movie” line to a point. But I find the last statement in the trailer nearly unconscionable:
“Find out the truth. Google search: 2012″
Any gullible, anti-science or conspiracy-minded person who Googles ‘2012′ will be led to woosite after woosite after woosite. Each one will apparently confirm the others and build on the potential panic.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Speaking of 2012 disaster BS, a friend of a friend was trying to convince me that something called physical or real polar shift is supposed to occur at that time. The north pole (not magnetic north, Physical north) is supposed to drop down to the equator causing death and disaster…bla bla bla. Phil I have searched the site and couldn’t find anything about it. I have searched the web and found that it was a theory supported by some scientists in the 50s but nothing else. Does anyone know anything about it? I would really like to be able to refute this claim if I hear about it again.
I don’t understand why people believe that as soon as the clock strikes twelve on Jan. 1,2012 that the Earth is going to reach into the Mid Atlantic Trench, pull out his/her pocket watch and say “I say, it looks like 2012 is here, time for disaster to strike”.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Phil, Phil, Phil, I’m surprised that you keep missing out on the real importance of 2012.
Back in 2000, all of the apocalyptic millenialists, rapture Christians, Y2K bug fearmongers, and otherwise run of the mill “Oooh, look, arbitrary round numbers!” people had their big drunken party for no real good reason and the rest of us were cleaning up vomit and torched cars for weeks. Weeeeee, 21st century, where’s my jetpack and robot chef?
In 2012, all the wingnuts, Mayans, New-agers, conspiracy theorists, pagans, trancers, ethnobotanists and other fringe types will get to have THEIR once-in-many-generations celebration. I have it on good authority that the 2012-ers have 1) superior inebriants, 2) looser morals, 3) significantly better music (excluding the New-agers). In short, the global party in December 2012 will RULE, and we should all be prepared to go on out and get a *serious* freak on. I, for one, welcome the inevitable 3 day hangover
November 13th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
I’m not ashamed to say that I am going to be there on opening night…. because thats what I do with pretty well all apocalyptic movies, it being my favorite genre and all.
I find plot holes in sci-fi movies and series all the time but I ignore them for the sheer fun of watching the writers concept about how humans can deal with disaster and out of this world experiences. You gotta take this crap with a grain of salt, or else you’ll end up like my sister who works in the medical field – screaming at the screen like a mad woman while watching John Q. Not cool at all.
…while the concept of a four mile high wave is absolutely stupid, I really have to say that the mix of visuals and music in that simple little trailer kinda creeped me out!
November 13th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
I’d rather see a trailer for 2061 than 2012.
Word.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
That was actually a pretty cool trailer. I might go see this. I’ve always been a fan of “end of the world” movies, even if this particular scenario is total bunk.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Then the Death Star drops out of hyperspace and blows up Earth, the end.
(Sorry. Grumpy.)
November 13th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Oooh, CT here: They’re making a movie about (another) End Of The World thing. And at the end of the trailer, there’s “Google search: 2012″. Which will lead to lots of woo.
Well, it’s obvious: All those “Sky is falling 2012″ websites are viral marketing.
Phew.
So I have no need to assume that there are hundreds upon hundreds of actual crackpots out there really believing that the mayan something calendar system means anything. They’re just hyping this movie, right?
… right?
November 13th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
I liked The Core, and Dante’s Peak, and I loved Volcano (maybe it’s my deepseated prejudice against LA, the only thing I was sorry to “lose” was the La Brea Tar Pits museum), and though I haven’t seen the Day After Tomorrow, I really should.
I also liked Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang; The Blues Brothers; and Back to the Future. Those were as realistic as 2012. They might be more fun, but I can always wait for the 2012 DVD.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Actually IMO the tsunami is overdone. Hollywood has lost its creative edge with end of the world movies. The last Fantastic Four movie was a PERFECT 2012 flick.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Daniel – thats what I was thinking too… while the tsunami looks cool, its been overdone so much that there is even a dozen cheap knockoff movies with the same principle.
Alien attacks…. now THAT never gets old. Nor do Zombies.
(World War Z movie comes out in 2010!!!!!)
November 13th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Lamest. Trailer. Ever.
The visual effects were very good, but the ‘message’ was so cliched and, well, stupid. Internet wackjobs everywhere are going to be loving this.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Roland Emmerich’s movies are not woo-woo propaganda, they’re a continuing Homage to all those 40s and 50s B-movies. If they weren’t monumentally dumb, they wouldn’t work.
Let us be honest, there aren’t too many genre movies that don’t have huge holes in their logic, never mind the usual disregard for most of the known laws of the Universe.
Let’s hear it for New York Popsicle and saving the world world with Power Macs.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
The trailer LOOKS cool, but I am perturbed at schlock-meister Emmerich* ripping off Kubrick with his choice of trailer music…
*actually the nameless peon at the trailer production house, but still…
November 13th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
“Obviously, I know there will be no disaster, astronomical or otherwise, in the year 2012.”
How can you possible make a statement like that? I understand what you’re trying to say, but as others have pointed out, you just can’t possibly know that there won’t be some kind of disaster in 2012. Unless… Are you really Sylvia Browne?
November 13th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Darth Curt:
*If small glaciers and polar ice caps on the margins of Greenland and the Antarctic Peninsula were to melt, the projected rise in sea level will be around 0.5 m. Melting of the Greenland ice sheet would produce 7.2 m of sea-level rise, and melting of the Antarctic ice sheet would produce 61.1 m of sea level rise. The collapse of the grounded interior reservoir of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet would raise sea level by 5-6 m.
Therefore, the approximate rise in sea level, if all the ice caps were to melt, would be ~74.3 m.

November 13th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
It’s not a flood 4 miles high, it’s just that Tibet is sinking
November 13th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
I always watch every major sci-fi film that’s released, but I’m boycotting this one. They are not presenting this as honest fiction but are playing on paranoid conspiracy theories by saying ‘find the truth’ and ‘google 2012′. I’ve argued against too many deluded people on youtube who are convinced there is a huge cover-up and we’re all going to die or be ‘transformed’ on the magic day. Abrams is playing to the lowest common demoninators: fear and paranoia, and that is an underhanded and cynical exploitation of the gullible. Plus this film will look soooo stupid come 2013 and forever after.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
I wonder if that is something like what Noah must have seen during the Flood?
November 13th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
december 21, 2012….ahh yes, beacause a 5000 year old culture could not have been wrong…..EVER!!! Some people need to get over themselves. However, I will be looking forward to the movie cause I loves me a good doomsday flick.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I thought that the trailer was amusing and the visual effects were nice, but I don’t like the conspiracy theorist vibe.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
I think we’re being far too harsh with this film. It’s going to be at least as accurate as the film about all the nuclear waste on the moon blowing up in 1999, right?
November 13th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
I really wish WWZ was done as a “Ken Burns-type” documentary. From the snippets I’ve heard from the book on tape, they got some NAMES to narrate that sucker – would’ve made a great special on HBO.
I don’t know how a 2 1/2 movie is going to be – I really hope it isn’t other DOtD – we’ve seen that already, I want something with real teeth.
Oh well – this particular load of garbage should make its 200mil & be gone in a month or so. Special effects alone will guarantee over 100mil (probably over opening weekend).
Give me Casablanca or any of the Thin Man movies – they just don’t make them like that anymore – and its a shame.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Oh, Emmerich.
I think I’ll enjoy this one in the same sense that I enjoyed the scene in The Day After Tomorrow where climate change literally chases people down hallways.
Some skeptic could do the world a service and make a 2012-refutation page and get loads of bloggers to link to it, so people who do search 2012 don’t just find the culturally-inaccurate woo. (Would it bother some of these people to actually research the Mayan calendar? Geez.)
November 13th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Therefore, the approximate rise in sea level, if all the ice caps were to melt, would be ~74.3 m.
The apparent level would probably be higher due to the weight of the water pushing the continents down.
November 13th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
HUGE error in the trailer.
The world population is predicted to reach the seven billion mark on Oct 18, 2012.
November 13th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
So Phil, what’s the odds of an asteriod a few miles across that we don’t detect will strike the earth in 2012. Your the Death from the Skies expert now. LOL
November 13th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Is this right? It’s been 65 million years since an asteriod that big hit earth. If this happens on average every 100 million years then we would be due for one in the next 35 million years. If I do this: 35 million X 365.25 = 12,783,750,000 so the odds of this asteroid size hitting us in any given day would be a 1 in 12,783,750,000 chance
November 13th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
This could only be a good flick if, and only if, they play up “camp”. I saw the Day After Tomorrow and nearly burnt my eyes out. It’s a knitpicker’s festival, that movie.
The most damnable part of the movie is where they burn books to survive. I think that’s where TDAT really struck a bad chord with me. Might it say more about the writer or director that books are so dispensable compared to a movie ?
Nice touch that the 2012 trailer trashes a Buddhist temple. I suppose we’ll have to wait to see how, or if, other houses of worship are destroyed.
November 13th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Ahem… it should have just about as much scientific accuracy as a certain show that shall remain nameless, despite the ads all over the page, depicting a certain character flitting all over the Universe in a Police Box, using a “Sonic Screwdriver” to save various civilizations from certain destruction at the hands of conical shaped robots that have devised unique ways of using toilet plungers.
November 13th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Poor Monk
November 13th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
dooooooood, did you see the temple get knocked off the mountain? wicked. the “science”, plot, and acting will s.u.c.k., but the effects get better every year.
November 13th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Pretty soon they won’t even need scripts!!!
Wait, I think that already happened….sometime around 1978 or so…..
November 13th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
You can forgive Amanda… Like you said, she gotta eat. And you’re not gonna hate Bruce Willis for being in Armageddon, right??
…Afterall, he’s John McClane. You can NEVER hate John McClane.
November 13th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Lawrence said: “I don’t know how a 2 1/2 movie is going to be – I really hope it isn’t other DOtD – we’ve seen that already, I want something with real teeth.”
All they have to do with the WWZ movie to make me happy is to go in depth with the zombie war tactics. Like the chapter where the gunners got in a giant square formation with “Sandlers” as relief…knocking off the zombies one after one until they piled sky high in front of them.. it would be brilliant.
If they focused too much on one character however, it would loose the feel of the book. I can just imagine big Hollywood signing on some big name actors and wanting to use them in the whole movie which would suck. For that reason you’re right – HBO would probably do it best.
November 13th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
The bad thing about really good trailers: that’s the only good scene in the whole movie.
Among the several dates for 2012, December 21 seems the one, most bandied about.
I’m cynical, not skeptical, about different things. And, I’m cynical about any alignment of bodies in space causing disaster on Earth. It never has, before. And, the Galactic Plane seems more tenuous to me, than any alignment of ALL the planets in our solar system.
But, like so many of you here, I do loves me a Doomsday flick. I’ll probably go see it.
November 13th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
I like it when things blow up…on screen.
November 13th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
So Amanda Peet is supposed to just appear in science documentaries? Give her a break, she’s an actress.
November 13th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
I will not spend one thin dime at a theater to support a movie that is even suggesting that there is anything unusual happening in 2012. It is just playing on people’s fears.
I am also tired of the entire (government is bad and is conspiring against you) genre of movies.
I still have faith in our republican form of democracy.
November 13th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Anti-VAX? What, the whole line, or just the Digital Equipment VAX/780? Everybody hated the VAX/750, of course.
November 13th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
It’s intriguing – in a bad way. This isn’t just a trailer, it’s a bit of viral marketing deliberately trying to scare people. I guess there will be longer trailers, but this one doesn’t introduce any characters or anything, just the message that our governments are hiding something important from us. OMG, is it a doco??? I have many gullible friends who will see this clip, be horrified at the wave, sympathise with the Buddhist monk (because they see that as a trendier, new age religion) and will rush to Google to absorb all the tripe on 2012 that is available there.
November 13th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Kinda takes the fun out of seeing a trailer like that when the first thing you think is “Where did all that water come from?”. Which is exactly what I was thinking, but I will say that seeing the water flowing over those mountains was kinda cool.
November 13th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Is it the actress Amanda Peet or the cosmologist Amanda Peet?
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/view-peet.html
November 13th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Christopher, I seem to remember the whole theme of shows like X-Files being based on the whole premise that the government was hiding something from us. It’s a frakkin’ movie! If your friends see this trailer, and get freaked ouut, I cannot imagine how they survived “Independence Day”, and “The Day After Tomorrow”? (Not to mention the viral marketing that went into “Cloverfield”)
Maybe take your friends hands and sit them down and tell them, as I was told, when I was a child, and scared by a movie (CEot3K comes to mind) “Listen, it’s Hollywood. It’s not real.”
November 13th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Oh I thought this was a documentary or something. That’s all we need: another Day After Tomorrow to spread misinformation about science.
November 13th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
and here I thought this was about Sarah Palin!
November 13th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
But just like watching a Mythbuster’s episode, I’d now like to know what possible set of events could happen that would result in those visuals.
The sky and air seem normal–no hypercane winds, no sky-wide meteor trails–no earthquakes, etc: everything perfectly normal except the 3-mile-high wall of water hundreds of miles inland.
What could cause this?
November 13th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Not to be anti-fun, but I have to agree with those who’ve said this is really awful. I love a good disaster movie (actually, I love the bad disaster movies even more), but this? Google 2012 is exactly the kind of thing that triggers totally normal people into insane jags of woo-related panic. Hell, as a sufferer of anxiety attacks over the years, I can tell you it’s really easy for your rational brain to go “You know this is all fake, right?” while your irrational brain goes “AHHHHHHHHHHHHDFJKASDLFJSLDKJF”. This kind of crap marketing borders on the malicious.
November 13th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Actually if you Google 2012, the first thing that comes up is a lame @ss Christian movie: 2012 Doomsday.
This movie that Phil refers to comes out next year.
November 14th, 2008 at 12:28 am
It’s kinda unnerving how they say at the very end to google the truth, 2012… o_O Wait, I’m not sure if that’s “unnerving” or “disgusting”. lol
November 14th, 2008 at 1:33 am
“2012″ reminds me of a end-of-the-world-thriller version of “1984″.
November 14th, 2008 at 2:40 am
Strange. Is it just me or was that music the exact same as in the trailer for The Shining with the two elevator doors where blood pours out of?
You can see what I’m talking about here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6qDqdYY6-Y
November 14th, 2008 at 4:04 am
I’d rather see a trailer for 2061 than 2012.
Geek: I’d rather see a trailer for 2038.
November 14th, 2008 at 7:01 am
Shame of any potential 2061 or 3001 movie is that folks like Tom Hanks have expressed interest in doing the project along with Keir Dulea and others but have been unable to get it off the ground and onto the screen.
Since it is a fantastic story, I’d really love to see it more so than the tripe like Apocolyto and others than clogs up the local cineplexes.
Oh well, guess Quantum of Solace will have to do for the weekend. I wonder if Phil will be doing some movie physics review on that movie!
November 14th, 2008 at 7:09 am
darnit, Diane, you beat me to it!
I was sure “disaster in 2012″ meant Palin.
The movie looks like good popcorn-munching fun though, I will see it.
November 14th, 2008 at 7:13 am
Oh hey, guys? It has aliens, too!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVi_2lHBVhQ
November 14th, 2008 at 7:14 am
I should add, the You-tube trailer is a joke, apologies for not putting that in the post with the link.
November 14th, 2008 at 7:59 am
They’ve got the dates wrong. The real disaster will be the four years leading up to 2012.
November 14th, 2008 at 7:59 am
Gotta say, the trailer really did not excite me at all. On the other hand, like Kathryn from Sunnyvale, I wonder is there anything that could cause a 3-4-mile-high flash flood like what’s in the trailer?
November 14th, 2008 at 9:13 am
Time will end on 1/1/2009 for my young nephew if he doesn’t get a replacement Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model Calendar.
He’s of “that age” and it’s the only thing that he’s allowed on his wall that is faintly provocative. It’s also the only calendar he will look at.
So, if his uncle (me) doesn’t log on to Amazon before Christmas, order the kid one, on 1/1/09 he will have reached the end of his days.
/snark
//besides, I may get him a Bettie Page one anyway.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Well, it can’t be any worse than these movies due out in 2012…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfgpGCtl550&feature=related
November 15th, 2008 at 5:38 am
You know what I find really scary …?
The fact that we are now so much closer to the year 2012 than the year 2000.
Yegods! How time rockets past.
I remember as a child how distant and futuristic the year 2000 seemed, & I remember reading Arthur C. Clarke’s ‘Space Odyssey 2001′ & imaging what that semi-mthical year mightpossobly be,like .. &now ist distant history. Now that’s scary.
November 15th, 2008 at 5:47 am
The Bad Astronomer predicted :
“Obviously, I know there will be no disaster, astronomical or otherwise, in the year 2012.”
Really? I disagree.
I think, sadly enough, that disasters of both natural and artifical varieties are a pretty safe bet for any year.
But, yes, I don’t see any reason why 2012 should be particularly worse than any other year either.
Sad thing is predicting that this year there’ll be earthquakes and fires and deaths of leaders and tragedies large and small is easy and usually correct for any year at all. Such is life & such things happen constantly.
Now predicting a year where NO major disasters occur anywhere – and getting that right – now that would impress me!
November 15th, 2008 at 7:48 am
I just want to add my comment here as well.
I’m not into the whole 2012 nonsense but I sure will watch this film.
I don’t care if it’s “innacurate”, I just want to see things getting destroyed in epic scales. I also like the idea of mankind receiving a well deserved slap in the face by Nature.
Another thing. Bill mentions that the governments of our planet could not hide something like this.
I simply don’t see any reason to think that’s even what the trailer is saying.
The governments are supposed to have the power and the intelligence to gather people in safe places and whatnot, when situations like this occur.
What if the disasters are simply too big and occur too fast?
What if “They Wouldn’t” simply means, “They just can’t becase they’re only humans as well, dealing with this right next to the people on the streets”.
I don’t see malice in “They Wouldn’t”, I see powerlessness.

Southern Californ just had their big 7.9 quake drill with 5million+ participants this week and it kicked off with a 3.3 within the first half hours. Only 12% of California has quake insurance.
That should scare everyone more than this movie trailer.
Only 21 sites in the US are certified TsunamiReady although all coastal areas should be.
Just because Roland is over-the-top, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t respect over-the-top weather possibilities.

I always love a good conspiracy theory but there are some things you just have to give a rest. Ah, what can you do. I think a movie based on Death From The Skies! would be good. After 2012 comes and goes there will probably be an apocalyptic scenario about the year 2020 for some reason like “the numbers match!” Oh, logic, I miss you.

YESSS !! another one ..
I am a disaster movie junkie!! Even though I’m turning into a hollywood science skeptic. Even though I have a bad habit of pausing the dvd and hollering at the movie with .. heeeeyy now what really would happen would be ..
but I still love em. Check this one out ..Dark Matter the movie ..
click on the trailer link to see it. VERY COOL !

No solar flare, no alignment, no Nibiru. No chance of anything big about to hit us without somebody letting the general population know.
But have we discounted every possibility? What if those extra-clever Mayans did know something? Forget the movie (and you will the moment you leave the cinema), but prepare for the worst, just a little, and it might save you.

Okay, i have something concrete to post here. NO Speculation, no guessing, no ‘maybe this will happen or maybe that’, just some simple facts that are worth noting. the trailer may have coincidentally been accurate with what will exactly happen, which is not the result of any melting ice caps or any other random sh*t. these are only the basics and these simple facts can be found on any major info website, like wikipedia or whatever. The event: Rapid Pole shift- caused by an alteration or disturbance in the regular gravitational forces in line with our planet, including the pull of the moon, the pull of the sun, and any other gravitational influence that alters the location of the poles on our planet, not reversing them, but randomly relocating them, so that our earth rotates on a new axis and the crust moves differently over the mantle, causing the equator and north/south pole to be moved respectively. 1. This change in relative locations of the earths lat/long will cause such rapid temperature change that surface winds may exceed 200 mph, and that would make it very hard to survive for very long. With wind comes waves, that is what they are caused by. Very big waves. Entire areas of the planet would change in temp. weeks or even days. The sahara may become cold, the polar ice caps may become scorching and melt, based on where the poles realign themselves. That means if you live in Los Angeles now, and the north pole relocates to Texas,(for example), it would be like living in Greenland or any other area of similar latitude, very, very cold. That is why the wind happens so extremely as well. 2. Momentum. This law of physics is our biggest enemy when the Rapid Pole Shift theory is hypothesized. Think about how the earth spins. The surface of our planet relative to it’s core is moving about 1000 mph. Angular velocity is (360 degrees/24 hours) =15 degrees per hour. With a circumference of 23000 miles roughly, that is roughly 1000 miles per hour surface speed. Now imagine that you are moving forward in a car at one thousand miles an hour, and suddenly the car slows down very fast and changes directions. Compare the crust to you in the car, and the core, including inner, outer, and mantle, are all the car. now as the crust, including the world’s oceans, you would be pulled very suddenly in a direction as that car is slowing down or changing direction. that is what the worlds oceans would do. they would continue in their 1000 mph direction while the rest of the world changes direction under them, and the oceans have the potential to envelope and completely cover (temporarily) entire continents, if not every continent, leaving huge dry spots behind them, and flooding beyond imagine, like in that trailer. This is not just a made up theory, it is entirely possible that rapid pole shift can happen and those would be only a few of the catastrophic results. Causes of rapid pole shift: any change in the gravity of other remote celestial bodies. Such as and specifically the moon, sun, and any planets or nearby asteroids. Somewhat prophetically and maybe just coincidence, the 2nd largest near earth object on record is coming very close to earth 2012, the sun, moon, and earth all align in 2012, and all of these gravitational forces acting on our planet at once has the potential to alter and disrupt our poles and the way our core rotates underneath our crust, causing these catastrophic events, in 2012. Post questions or comments please. If you think any of this info is incorrect, you are probably wrong, but I would appreciate any opinions/comments. my email is ‘beanerschnitzel4@yahoo.com’ if you want any additional info or have any questions. I’d be happy to discuss them and answer them with you.

To RhysBM (comma not working) there is actually no such thing as a planetary alignment it is just a conjunction of the planets on one side of the sun. Many times in the past of the human race have planetary CONJUNCTIONS occured and nothing threatening has happened. Infact people thought that a planetary “alignment” on May 5th 2000 would rip the earth in half. We’re still here. If the planets did actually allign perfectly then the results would probably be minimal because the perfect alignment would only last a small amount of time do to the rotation of the planets. Of course if a perfect allignment is possible (which it probably isn’t) than it probably wouldn’t happen in our lifetimes. Anyway a global cotastrophe won’t kill off the human race in 2012.
P.S. A Solar Flare or Coronal Mass Ejection really only pose a threat to our power grids. Now don’t get me wrong a power grid wipeout is some pretty nasty business but there probably won’t be a mass extinction.

I thin, that this movie can be good. Trailer seems to be very convincing. Music, Picture, scenes and atmosphere is very good. Regarding reality I think that this is so possible to expect unexpected that this film is not far from the truth. Earth and universe is unpredictable.
Remember, nature will always find the way. It`s way to continue it`s chain of life. You can`t do anything about it.

…Thats rediculous
Nixon could never be a crook, and the titanic is 100% unsinkable…
I refuse to believe that something that big could ever happen in our lifetimes. Its just downright rubbish!
Well,
When Jan. 1st 2012 comes, there will be a short moment of I told you so’s.
And the year will go smooth, and then everyone will relax…
Then of course, when December comes and everyone starts crying…
I’m buying a donkey, naming it bill, stocking up on cigarette’s and practicing my shakespear routine.
“Cry, Havoc! …and let slip the dogs of war.”
[Sorry for the bad spelling, if any. I don't really care enough to go back and fix typos.]

None of us can sit here and say what or what not is going to happen. Whether it happens the way the movie shows or another way. And we prob. will not see it coming. We will consume ourselves with things going on in society and other unimportant things and will blind ourselves to the possiblity of something happening in 2012. If you have done any research you would see that alot of things are going on around 2012. Here it is 2008 and the bees are disappearing…..Einstein said that once the bees were gone, humans would have about 4 years until they perish….that would be around 2012….the mayan calendar…..sunspot activity most active in 2012….as well as many other things…..so just keep your eyes open and hope for the best but expect the worse….our time here will end sometime wether you want to believe it or not…there are things out there that are beyond our knowledge…so just watch out…
December 23rd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
So, that gives Obama four years to screw things up so badly the world ends in 2012.
December 25th, 2008 at 11:30 am
What if our governments did know that something was going to happen. How would you break that news to the populace? CNN news conference?
I could see it now. The announcement would tell everyone that there is an earth changing event and that we should all move to amother planet right?
No, wrong, it would be as the movies slogan.
Its not that they won’t tell us, it’s that they can’t.
It should suffice that all these disaster movies have been produced in the last 20 years as some kind of mass preparation for coming events.
Have fun people. It’s basically over. I love the way the people that are most afraid call us conspiracy theorist. They actually believe that there are no such thing as conspiracies and that the government tells us everything.
Assclowns.

Humm, … what to think of it all! Scientists agree the Solar flares are coming in 2012, and truly that will affect power grids, unless man takes steps to protect them, which is doable by controlled blackouts and power grids management. But what about the Mayan’s prediction about man having to separate himself from his Ego? How will man be enlightened? What will cause two additional chakras to be come activated, and how will we be changed by this? Could this solar radiation be so intense that man could be affected in someway? Evolutionary episodes have taken place on this planet, just as polar shifts have. Scientist has proven both. The bee disappearance has taken place.
The magnet pole is on the move from northern Canada direction Scandinavia (could take a long time before it is there). =)
But the magnet field’s strength is becoming weaker. I watched a science program here in Germany clearly stating this is actually so. They also noted the global climate changes are more precisely matched the to changes in the Sun’s activity than in the changes of CO2 levels.
So what should we do? The only prepares I know of for all of us, I s to look inwardly and prepare ourselves mentally to accept the possibility and continue on with everyday life. The thought in it’s self could be a good reason not to hate so much, and to hold more together with all those around you now. A change of mind set about everyone around us. Less war, less hate and a more common respect for all folks around us.
If it happens there is nothing we can do to stop it. So my suggestion is make peace in your own heart to prepare you for what ever may come (if anything). Make a meaning full change in attitude toward others around you, and place less importance on material things.
Respect will mean everything!

I don’t know why you people are getting so upset at all of the end of days conspiracy theorists out there. After all, their way of thinking makes a certain amount of sense when you think about it. Chances are good they will be right someday and if they aren’t then it’s a good thing. It’s like when I asked my friend why he was such a pessemist and he replied “Well, because you’re either proven right, or pleasantly suprised.”
January 30th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Ummm, ya the only thing is…we are lining up with the galactic center. Wherever you got the information that that was a conspiracy theory is bull because, well, it happens every 26000 years and can be proven scientifically (it’s a little under 26000 years actually). This isn’t to say something will happen, but we will pass through galactic center sometime in the next few years. So…feh to you sir.

its just strange that this world and its economy is where it is…. 4 yrs before assumed world devistation. 4 yrs of Obama’s term. its basically up to him a man of bronze skin, hair of wool (as the bible states). and come on bronze is 5 parts copper 1 part tin and its odd that Obama is muslim leading back to early civilization and part white. the things happening today can almost make u believe this is real. speculation…yes. hollywood…yes, because its apocolyptic and because ppl will pay of course hollywood will do something they are almost certain will make them money. ppl do your research is all i have to say.

ehmm… my daughter recently ran downstairs to me crying her eyes out because she had heard about the 2012 predictions.
I convinced her that nothing like that was going to happen because I truly believe that this is a load of ****!
Our calender ends every year.
btw…. these sights had my daughter freaked and she is 14 so guess what it might be doing to people younger.!

Urgent!
I have to say that this might be true.. forget about what they say we know the disaster that will happen but listen to this…. every time i go to the movies theirs something that repeats it self over and over.. and that is movie shows like knowing, 2012, 10,000 bc,9/11,flight 93, all of this stuff is agreed by the goverment for us to see.. and what I’m saying is that every 4 months theirs a movie for disaster on this earth.. NYC is where i live.. and the ufo base is so private that they wont tell us what they are keeping underneeth that UFO BASE. That one of the facts… but listen to this.. 2012 is the year that some may die.. not the whole world will fall apart but some area’s will and its happening now..

I have one thing to say,get your hands on a book titled “planet X forecast & 2012 survival guide”. Written by people equally as experienced & bright as Phil Plait.By the way working for NASA does not equate to being intelligent,i work for a huge aero space company(the biggest)who builds nearly all NASA craft & it is full of idiots.

Reading all these comments i am surpprised some are smart some are closed mineded and some are pessismise or what ever..If you know astronomy and know some science, or if you think that we are the only life form in the entire universe you are to square to understand life stars and planetry ,do you know crop circles not the fake ones but ones that no human could understand or know how to make,,I study these things and lets just say one thing for sure,, joe is right about the year 26000,, this is true, and it is not jan 1 the exact date and time is dec 21 at 11 11 am this unfortunately will be a bad time for all of us and this could be the first time that earth actuly is pulled from its orbit this has never happend before..But what do you do tell the world,, create mass pandomoniam..NO YOU DONT..spend now!!! and enjoy your family and freinds we dont know for sure,, but we are heading for something big very soon cant explain the whole scenario but it is bad..

OH yea mr Rhys bm very good and somewhat close the earth does spin at at 1000 mph that is why the earth is 24000 miles in diameter and 24 hours in a day and also you are very close on all what you write i like it the most…

I saw the trailer 2012 by Emmerich.I think we are up to something crucial here..In fact, It’s all cryptic info for most of the people.Hidden meanings everywhere.Emmerich points where no film director has ever pointed before. The day after.10,000 BC.And now this. Its a trilogy,in fact.In he day after movie, he deals with the sudden climate change which can be caused by stopping the Gulf stream /in 10,000BC, he is no more no less informing us of the Bauval / Gilbert / Hoagland thesis, that, Atlantis refugees who escaped the motherland flood were actually building the Pyramids ,forcing primitive tribes as slaves , who used mammoths to carry huge granite rocks to the Nile river , where the Sphinx and the Pyramids proudly still stand there, trying to pass their message of an older, greater past,to the younger generations, and even a possible warning for the next flood. This is depicted in Mayan calendars of course. And now we know of it. And this is the message of the third movie – to complete the trilogy. In watching the trailer, you can clearly hear a bee hive sound in the beginning. So,for anyone who knows about it, that brings us to alleged Einstein statement about bees vanishing ..and the 4 years left for mankind after this event happens. Now this one is all over the web for just a couple of years and that’s even more strange..Even if its just an urban myth, the fact is, that, globally , the Bee hives are reduced by 70% according to latest statistics.Maybe an effort to promote the idea of massive human devastation??Maybe. So that sound is really a clue , and it links to Einstein himself and Prof. Hapgood’s Earth crust displacement theory – that RhysBM so thoroughly analyses . A theory that Einstein himself totally approved and even strongly promoted in any level he could.Might that action by Prof. Einstein has lead to something bigger, involving e.g. government global conspiracy in hiding the truth from the public about the forthcoming Great Flood??Alternative 3 maybe?Mars and moon secret colonization efforts??To me It s a possibility.Given the facts, its the ONLY possibility..and so, that last clue , finally unlocks the cryptic circle of Mr.Emmerich’s work: The man is into a mission ..and his message is simple.Pass the truth in such a way everyone should be informed and subconsciously accept it likewise.Reveal the facts so that anyone may see how futile any action to avoid the upcoming catastrophe really is..the movie truly deals with a very strong scenario.Earth crust displacement has occurred many times on our planet.Last time it happened it caused devastating atmospheric conditions, leading to sudden climate shift, thus , resulting to the instant frost even of huge mammoths during feeding time..huge tidal waves are caused by the inertia phenomenon and the fact that, the Earth Poles are closer to the planetary center by 12 Kilometers in comparison to the Equator. So even a slight core displacement of one to six degrees from the current position can cause such catastrophic change of relative altitudes ,that regions can be permanently covered by water – as others will emerge from ocean deeps..this has happened and it will happen again and again. As for the cause, Einstein-Hapgood hypothesized that, an imbalance of Polar land ice accumulation could bring the earth to a flipping state or a temporarily loss of balance , pretty much like a whirligig yo-yo. And that may bring in mind the ice melting , that’s taking place in Arctic circle these days.In Antarctica, the icy land mass is ten times more.If the arctic land ice cover melts first, that may as well trigger a slight disorder in crust balance..combining it with the fact that we are in a turning point in Equinox precession , that happens nearly every 26,000 yrs, well, this may result to a doomsday scenario, where we’ll be expecting a global flood of unprecedented magnitude ..nothing can survive from such global events. Even mountain tops sky high as the Rockies are expected to be swept away by the inertial factor if the displacement is more than 10 degrees.. God have mercy on our souls for most of us , for only some astronauts may survive – altogether with some high land shepherds..
April 20th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
wow, interesting idea with the trilogy.. it definetly is a bee hive in the trailer, now how odd is that? Completely random sound for a company to put in a trailer that has to do with a flood and a monk… someone had a purpose for that
not to mention 10,000 BC was quite a cryptic movie… the idea of ancient astronauts / atlantis was prevalent.
April 27th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
i’m glad someone s found it as useful food 4 thought.indeed, you don’t combine such cryptic messages , that only a few are familiar with…less theres a larger than life purpose behind..One might add , that theres more than meet the eye in these guy’s films. after all – the StarGate is his work …So hes got a tendency 2 deal with cryptic situations the 1st place -all along combining them with corny characters,as we’ve repeatedly seen,(the character relief type )just to make the whole situation more digestible and even more subconsciously acceptable by a wide audience .
May 15th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
lol we will die lol
June 18th, 2009 at 11:15 am
Hmmmmmm,
Let’s see:
Global warming which everyone ignores
Glacial melting at a unseen rate
A world economic crash which is getting worse by the day
Nuclear weapons proliferation, sooner or later some idiot will use them if they have them.
We are due for a planet killer object to hit the earth anytime now
And not to mention those pesky solar flares
I don’t believe about all the hype in the movie, but then again 12/21/2012 would seem an appropriate date if you believe the Bible, or all the other visionary’s that for tale the end.
I’d drop a 20$ bet on it. lol
September 6th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
I’ll take your 20$ bet and raise you 20$.
October 13th, 2009 at 7:08 am
Just watched the movie and what a SNOOZEFEST!!!!!
I’ not commenting on religion or Mayan’s only thing i know for sure is that society is changing for the worse and time is speeding up so something has gotta give sooner or later, i doubt that means the world is gonna end but definately a huge cataclysm that wakes everyone up might be a good thing
as for the movie the idea that it wasn’t really the end of the world just a shift in reality so to speak is right IMO.
however the way they went about it with endless 5 min segments encopassing 1hr of real time. and alot of implied natural disasters but very little actual visual.
And a rapture that only took 2 people that we could see, very little actual natural disasters no massive tsunami going over the Himalayas which was in the trailer,
Really bad acting, horrible special effects
ie it’s meant to be snowing and freezing cold, yet they are walking around in skimpy clothing just saying oo it’s cold and the snow never actually collects on any surface.
a mmassive hailstorm that miraculously only one piece actually impacts the car and then stops and there’s no hailstones or even water on the road.
A huge weatherstorm and a small duo seater the plane flies through it completely unscathed? and oooo watch out it’s a bit rough. zzzzzzzz
reminds of in Lost In Space the movie where they fly into the sun and just put there hands up to block the light and say “woh it’s a bit hot”
And to top it off though it wasn’t said specifically it was obviously implied that the pregnant woman was the second Mother Mary and gave birth to another Jesus.
bout 30mins into the movie i was hoping there world would end just so i didn’t have to sit through this crap any longer.
luimp this one in with Knowing starring Nicholas Cage, but least that movie had some special effects.
1 star out of 10.
Sooner movie makers realise that special effects don’t make up for crappy acting and no storyline the better.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:49 am
Ooooh no – you didnt watch the Emmerich film “2012″ , but rather a christian – oriented load of sh**t called Doomsday 2012..oh well, thats not Emmerich, and it happened to others as well..in the meantime you should watch the Second 2012 trailer – and its even scarier than the 1st!! Now as 4 the R. Emmerich movie, it was originally scheduled for july 2009 but it was delayed by Sony till this November..and that’s all for all I know 4 the moment. So its almost a month left for the movie 2012 !! ..Oh – and just 1172 …days yet for the Mayan calendar alledged ..Doomsday!
