Hubble’s Advent on The Big Picture

The Big Picture (the Boston Globe’s high-res photo feature) has a new idea: an advent calendar using Hubble pictures! Every day, TBP will post a new Hubble image with a brief explanation, leading up to Christmas.

TBP’s proprietor, Alan Taylor, had asked if I wanted to pitch in, but sadly I am overwhelmed with work right now (including researching this year’s Top Ten Astronomy Pictures; stay tuned for more info on that!) so he’s on his own… but judging by his first choice (V838 Monocerotis) I think he’ll do just fine.

    And your point Fly is….

The fact it is a one of kind most advanced peice of technology ever made, of course they might be delays in fixing it it is not like ordering replacement for RAM for your PC.

David, I think Fly was pointing Dr. Plait to some subject material for a future BABlog post (so he could get a “tip of the Hadron Hat” or something like that). :)

@Larian, Fly has trying to make a conspiracy out of the LHC.

OK, am I the only one reminded of DS9′s wormhole when looking at that animation of V838 Monocerotis?

Possibly, but now that you’ve mentioned it I can’t stop seeing it.

    David,

You say it is the “most advanced peice of technology ever made”. Well if it doesn’t work then what? 2nd if it’s dangerous when they said it wasn’t then what? If the weld was destroyed then how can they be sure that was the problem?

Advent calendar – isn’t that a bit too religious for your skeptical tastes BA? ;-)

Phil Plait, the creator of Bad Astronomy, is an astronomer, lecturer, and author. After ten years working on Hubble Space Telescope and six more working on astronomy education, he struck out on his own as a writer. He's written two books, dozens of magazine articles, and 12 bazillion blog articles. He is a skeptic and fights the abuse of science, but his true love is praising the wonders of real science.
