From February 19 – 22, 2009, I’ll be in San Diego attending Spacefest, a fantastic conference featuring scientists, astronauts, artists, and space afficiandos. I’ve written about it before, so you can get the details there.
Kim Poor, the organizer, just informed me that he has updated his guest list: it now includes Apollo 12 astronaut Dick Gordon, as well as Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood — the stars of the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey"! That’s very cool. Moreover, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart will give a talk about how to prevent asteroid impacts, a topic he is an expert in (as people who have read my book already know).
I had a fantastic time at the last Spacefest (check out my photos on Flickr!), and I’m really looking forward to this one. Plus, San Diego is a happening town, and I always enjoy visiting. I hope to see plenty of BABloggees there!

As a geologist, I object to attempts to prevent asteroid impacts. They provide a valuable opportunity to do unique science, and should be encouraged, not prevented.

Already registered.

I’ve met and own a LOT of Kim Poor’s artwork. I wish I could attend… Rats.

I wish I could go! That would be very cool.

Lockwood also played Gary Mitchell in the second pilot for the original Star Trek series, “Where No Man Has Gone Before”.

Keir Dullea, the first thing I think of is the very cool Canadian space series called “The Starlost”. I think they had a budget of $20 for the entire run of the series. Cool concept though.

Dullea and Lockwood played supporting roles in 2001. HAL was the star (if by “star” you mean central and pivotal character)

^ I still wish someone would make 2061. HAL lives inside the Great Wall!
H=I
A=B
L=M
Go figure.

Another K-T Boundary certainly would provide unique science, provided anyone was left to do it.

I was going to mention Lt Cmdr Gary Mitchell, but Knurl beat me to it.
A few people have noted the HAL raised one letter = IBM thing, but Arthur C Clarke always denied it, and said that if he had been aware of it, he would have found another name for his computer.
