Two interviews for the new year

A couple of interviews I did to start off 2009:

1) I chatted with Reed Braden from the podcast Two Smokin’ Hot Freethinkers (some NSFW language, here’s the family-friendly one). He also got some brief words from other bloggers like Splendid Elles, PZ whats-his-name, Rebecca Watson, and Hemant Mehta. My part starts at 7:30 in.

2) I was the guest on AstroCast.tv (not to be confused with Pamela and Fraser’s AstronomyCast) for a longer discussion about bad astronomy and Death from the Skies! Part 1 is online now, and there will be two more parts that’ll go up later in the month.

Really? the 2012 thing bugs you? I like to use it to my advantage! I bet my friend $20 that 2012 will come and go and (gasp!) we’ll still be here! Of course, if the world does end (which it won’t) we’ll all be dead, so i won’t have to pay up. *gloat*
Ok, i can see why it bugs you….she believes the world will end, 9-11 is a conspiracy by the government, believes in psychics, dust motes reflecting light in a camera are “spirits” has bought healing crystals to realign her psychic vibrations….the list goes on. She drives me nuts. Nothing i say can persuade her to the dark side of skepticism. And she’s recently discovered….can you guess? can you? oh this is so easy!….yup, you’re right! The Moon Hoax! I give it a month before she’s presenting me with evidence it was all faked. *sigh*

Phil, I’m reading Death from the Skies and I compare you favorably with my other favorite science popularizer writers, Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov.

As a kid, I read every Asimov fiction and non-fiction book in our small town library, which must have been over 30 books, and went on to do the same in a different small town high school library.

And Carl, well, he had me at “billions” doing voiceovers on Nova long before I saw his face or read his books or went to his live lectures. Alas, you don’t have his sexy voice, but you can’t have everything :)

I really owe my love of science to Asimov. We need more authors and more books by people who can write well for the general audience. But I suppose nowadays, blogging and YouTubing is extremely important for reaching youth. But my sister still lives in that small town and they still only have dial-up access to the internet – no cable, no DSL out on the farm. We still need books to reach those kids.

You are still pushing that Death From the Skies book? Aren’t you supposed to be working on your next one, and not pimping the old stuff? ;)

    Good interviews Phil!

Wow, that first one was quite a ball.

Wow, that first one was quite a ball. I’ll have to watch the video interview on a faster ‘Net connection :(
