I don’t usually repost an old article, but you know what? It tastes just as good as it did back in November.
The Sun rises on America once again.

I’m hopeful.
January 20th, 2009 at 7:08 am
The other day, I overheard a woman on the bus, who apparently works in some manner of government or service capacity, relating a story about the day after the election. A woman had called up and asked her, “Why hasn’t anything changed yet? He said there would be change!”
I didn’t know whether to chuckle when I heard that, or if I should weep at the lack of critical thinking.
Is it a new day, and the beginning of a new era. As you said, we need to roll up our sleeves and get to work. The potential for changing things, in the government, in the state, in our cities, homes, personal lives, is always there, if only we would put forth the effort, with earnestness and an eye for reality.
January 20th, 2009 at 7:25 am
I’m sure glad I’m not in Obama’s shoes. Living up to the kind of hype he has been the target of is going to be impossible.
I certainly wish him and the country the best, though.
January 20th, 2009 at 7:35 am
Obama will do ok. He certainly couldn’t do worse than the incumbent.
January 20th, 2009 at 8:01 am
Some of us *have* been working hard for many, many years, and all *without* some politicians to tell us what to do. Imagine that. Switch that skepticism gland back on. BTW, I voted for Obama. I just don’t buy into the hype. To paraphrase John Lennon, imagine no ideology.
January 20th, 2009 at 8:05 am
Nice repost to have after what was supposedly the most depressing day in history (utter bollocks by the way, I had a great day full of cracking news). Still don’t think Obama’s going to be all that great, he’s just another politician who’s as full of crap as the next one, but I truly hope he surprises me.
January 20th, 2009 at 8:06 am
At last we have a President that’s smarter than me.
Whew! Whatta relief! Now the fun begins!
January 20th, 2009 at 8:13 am
I don’t expect good economic times anytime soon with unemployment expected to perhaps hit double digits. We don’t seem to have much leverage with a $400+ billion deficit and miniscule interest rates. Maybe things will be on the upswing come November 2010 for the midterm elections.
January 20th, 2009 at 8:19 am
(sigh)
I’d hope that someone as skeptical as Phil would see through the pandering of the Democrats as well as the atrocities of the Republicans.
Of course, I’m a Libertarian so neither major party really leaves me with the warm fuzzies.
Good luck to Obama, though; he’s going to need it.
January 20th, 2009 at 8:19 am
Yay! Now we can look forward to trillions in bailouts.
How exactly is he gonna pay for that?
January 20th, 2009 at 8:20 am
Let’s see..
Today an invocation will be done by an anti-gay, anti-woman preacher, we have an 850B “stimulas” package on the table that we can’t afford, we have an interventionist foreign policy continuing…
Ah, the winds of “change”
January 20th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Today is a long-awaited breath of fresh air.
BTW, there’s still time to place bets with all those O=AntiXist people. I’m looking to make some money off of their pious bugnuttiness.
January 20th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Mr. Plait;
I strongly disagree with your statement:
“And like any day when it starts, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.”
The following are my reasons:
1. You are not clear if you are defining start of a day. Are you refering to the transition from the previous day 11:59pm to 12am? If you I am still sleeping.
2. Assuming that you mean, after waking up. I prefer to have breakfast.
2. I typically wear short sleeve t-shirts. I feel rolling up my sleeves is pointless and looks silly.
3. I refuse to get to work if the day happens to be a day off from work.
4. What exactly am I supposed to be working on?
January 20th, 2009 at 8:47 am
The hype, it burns!!!!
(That’s not a dig at the BA, but the media & the population in general.)
BTW: Good luck, Mr. President.
January 20th, 2009 at 8:48 am
It won’t be fun for these guys:
January 20th, 2009 at 8:59 am
I overheard a conversation at a restaurant a few weeks ago that really set off my woo alarm. The guy doing all the talking was trying to make the point that Barack Obama was the anti-christ since he and Jesus didn’t share any common letters in their first (BARACK/JESUS) or last (OBAMA/CHRIST) names. Ugh…

@ JoeSmithCA,
Today, my day started at 14:05 GMT — I reside in the U.K.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:11 am
@Joe- Rolling up your sleeves on a short sleeved shirt only looks silly if you don’t have a mullet hairdo to accompany it. You sort of go all in on that fashion or back away – no halfing that style.
Regarding Obama though – he made some hefty promises. I hope he can deliver on them soon. I’m holding off on my Kumbaya signing until I see what the results are (but the band is warming up).
@Ray- It’s only about what, $8,000 per household added to the national debt? We’ll just sign up for some Chinese credit cards!
January 20th, 2009 at 9:11 am
@BA “The Sun rises on America once again.”
So what you’re saying is it’s morning in America, right? Hmmm, now where have I heard that one before?
I remember back when Reagan was elected his wife Nancy decided to replace the White House china with new china. Of course, since we were in a bad economic recession the mainstream media tore her up one side and down the other side. Now, the media is hyping that this is the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, even worse than the Reagan recession. But when Obama plans the most expensive Inauguration in American history not one peep coming from the alphabet soup networks. When Obama buys a half hour of primetime TV time on most of the major networks a week before the election there is no mention of excessive spending. I guess over-the-top spending only applies to a Rebpublican president. The double standards are obvious.
May I suggest that the supposed “pro-reality” camp pay attention better to certain things, like, uh … Oh, I don’t know, maybe reality.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:14 am

Tom I’ve been reading elsewhere that the cost of the inauguration is only a couple of million more than the Bush one. $157M for Bush and $160M for Obama. More expensive yes but not the order of magnitude that has been implied.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:19 am
It’s funny how people will use any occasion to find something to gripe about politically.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:21 am
Let’s not forget an important lesson learned from history itself:
Politicians are never to be trusted, even if you got high hopes for them. (ESPECIALLY if the hopes are so high…)
Good luck you all.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:28 am
Jeeze, we’re getting the inauguration live here in Oz. 3.30AM now. I should go to bed and watch the replay.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Unfortunately, like most new days, it usually ends up like every new day before it.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:48 am
It’s funny how people will use any occasion to find something to gripe about politically.
You’re right. Everything is great. The government hasn’t spent itself into a fifty mile deep hole, and is now looking at raping *my* retirement to climb back out (I refer more to the California state government here.) Wheee!
We gripe about the religiosity here, too. Some of us justifiably see little difference between the two. I didn’t buy “morning in America” when Reagan said it, either, if that helps, and I was just a teenager back then. I’m baffled by anyone over, say, 21 years old who hasn’t seen through the piffle of the political class.
There’s also the overblown nature of the inauguration. It used to be a quiet ceremony, maybe right in the oval office, and then the new President got to work. Instead there’s buzz about the First Couple’s first dance. What is this? A royal wedding?
Jeeze, we’re getting the inauguration live here in Oz. 3.30AM now. I should go to bed and watch the replay.
Well, that’s what you get for living on the Earth’s bottom.
I tease you Aussies! Actually, been considering retiring there if the cornholing of my finances isn’t too bad. Costa Rica and Belize are also on the short list.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:51 am
I just saw a blog post yesterday with a person claiming he could solve our economic woes by giving every person in the U.S. $1 million to stimulate the economy…and that it would cost only $350 million…I had to point out the wee error in his math.
I voted for Obama and think he is a smart and has good intentions. Getting them through Congress is where it gets dicey.
I know a lot of people criticize the Rick Warren invocation today, but did anyone catch that Gene Robinson, the gay Episcopal Bishop, spoke at the events on Sunday? I found it interesting that I heard nothing about it until after the fact.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Rolling up your sleeves on a short sleeved shirt only looks silly if you don’t have a mullet hairdo to accompany it. You sort of go all in on that fashion or back away – no halfing that style.
Don’t forget the pack of cigarettes rolled up in that sleeve.
Why that never became a fashion trend to sweep the world from Birmingham to the runways of Paris I’ll never understand.

I’m generally a cynic, but this is a very, very good day.

Nah, he meant after 2012 when the Great Catastrophe Of Mysterious Proportions leaves only 350 people like in the continental US.
I have to admit, though, that the trailer for “2012″ with the giant tidal wave *is* pretty cool. I used to enjoy disaster films before they got preachy.

The rolled-up short sleeve also works with a greased up pompadour.
January 20th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Overblown is right. Sheesh. What is with the overly long “invocation” too? They call ‘em prayers in this neck of the woods. They really could have done this thing for about $100 worth of cookies and coffee in the Oval Office.
QD, it depends on your Spanish. I’m sure that you could find a pretty little spot in Oz that would compare with Costa Rica and Belize but I think we’d be way more expensive.
January 20th, 2009 at 10:01 am
I’m generally a cynic, but this is a very, very good day.
Well, I don’t think folks like me are saying it’s a bad day. It’s cool to see history (first black president), but, well, we “24″ fans were already used to it. President Palmer ruled!
The new season has a female president. I wonder if the writers were anticipating a Hillary win?

What, just because some Chicago politician is getting inaugurated?
January 20th, 2009 at 10:04 am
@Quiet Desperation: I’ll take President Palmer over the last few presidents any day (including this incoming one).

Congratulations USA and good luck.

So many English speaking folks have retired to Costa Rica I wonder if I could get by with a decent electronic phrasebook, and just pick it as I went along. Either that or I’d go to one of those language camps prior to retiring. Unlike *some* folks, I’m quite happy to learn the new language of my new country.
They really could have done this thing for about $100 worth of cookies and coffee in the Oval Office.
Oh, as a taxpayer I’d be willing to pony up for some decent pizza and beer.

Besides, all she has to do is pull back let, Jack solve the problem, and then go in and take out the bad guy and his minions. Don’t they know by now that when Jack Bauer is on the job, it’s solved within 24 hours?
At least this season is a lot better so far than last season, and the whole “First Gentleman” thing is a hoot.
January 20th, 2009 at 10:15 am
I meant last few RL presidents, though the presidents on 24 since Palmer have left much to be desired.

Yeah, I see that now. Oops.
January 20th, 2009 at 10:27 am

Let’s see, Constitutional lawyer, served in a state legislature, served in the Senate, has charm and charisma, seems to be pretty intelligent…I think he’ll do a relatively decent job. He’ll make some mistakes, which of course people will pounce on, due not in small part to the overly hyped up job the media and sycophants have done. He’s got some major work ahead…lots of things to fix, problems to overcome that are leftovers from previous administrations, so he probably won’t accomplish all the things he promised in the campaign (and even without all the problems to be fixed he probably wouldn’t accomplish a good chunk, politics being what it is), but I think he’ll do a decent job. I mean, he’s no actor or failed oil tycoon, but he’ll do.
January 20th, 2009 at 10:53 am

He has so much to live up to, so I kind of feel sorry for him. All I ask is that everyone relaxes the “savior” talk a wee bit–it would help out everyone. And God Bless America!

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/20/obama.politics/index.html
A few nuggets from Obama’s Inaugural address:
“But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.”
Apparently this time of “standing pat” has only recently expired. It doesn’t seemed to have applied only a few months ago when Senator Obama voted to give $850 billion of taxpayer money to the “narrow interests” which consisted of various banks. I’m sure there won’t be any pork barrel spending at all during Obama’s administration.
“What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them — that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works”
Answer: NO
“We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan.”
The “peace” in Afghanistan is to be achieved by sending an additional 50,000 soldiers to that country.
“This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.”
LOL. That line is sure to bring tears to BA’s and PZ’s eyes.

@Tim – Looks like you are right. Roberts messed up by putting the word “faithfully” after “President of the United States”. He said it wrong, Obama paused, and then Roberts said it right.
Kind of a bummer actually given how many times that is going to be re-played.
He nailed his speech though. Dang he can give a speech.
January 20th, 2009 at 11:31 am
@TimG “Did the Chief Justice Roberts flub the oath and throw Obama off?”
Absolutely. It’s all part of a vast right-wing conspiracy. That’s why Bush appointed Roberts to that position, so that he could deliberately cause the next Democratic president to flub his oath of office.

Two of the most important qualifications for being a politician: charisma and poise. All the rest (intelligence, etc.) is just icing on the cake, really.

President Barack Obama”
That’s funny. I thought it was precisely our way of life that was the cause of the warming planet. So apparently we will not apologize for causing global warming.
January 20th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
If you think consumption is the defining element of our way of life, I’d agree about the “not apologize” remark.
However, I think that Obama meant that not apologizing for being an open secular society in the western progressive tradition. You have to disregard Obama’s stand on the environment to cynically suggest his words were meant to be a defense of Hummers and McMansions.
January 20th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
@Tom Marking “@TimG “Did the Chief Justice Roberts flub the oath and throw Obama off?”

Dude. We get it: you don’t think Obama’s the messiah. But a few seconds’ research* shows that the answer to TimG’s question is “yes”. Whoopdeefrakkindoo. I suspect that Our Lord and Savior spent many hours making sure he had the oath memorized, then went to recite what Roberts had said and had a mental “wait, whut?” moment because it didn’t match. Again, whoopdefrakkindoo. Roberts flubbed. Obama flubbed. Neil Armstrong flubbed, too**.
*The Oath: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, [yadda yadda]“. Roberts moved the “faithfully”.
**Earlier. Not today, AFAIK.
January 20th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
C’mon everyone, I know this is a skeptics blog, and I certainly am a proud skeptic, but a little optimism here! Whether you like Obama or not, agree with his politics or not, there were over a MILLION people out in the freezing cold to watch him be inagurated. There were untold millions watching on TV and the net. Obama gave a hopeful speech to a nation of people who want to be inspired. Reagan gave a similar speech when he was inaugurated. Both took office at a time whent he nation was clearly down not only statistically but also psychologically.
What’s not to like? I’ve never, ever, heard a politician much less a president include “Non-believers” when he was talking about religious groups. As was quoted above he specifically mentioned the importance and use of scientific standards. Was some of it feel good piffle? Sure. But he clearly distinguished himself from his predecessor and that has to be viewed as a good thing.
Politicians can let us down. Reagan had Iran-Contra, Clinton couldn’t keep his fly zipped, Bush the elder wasn’t so hot at domestic policy. I too am worried that the media has built Obama up too high, but lets give the guy a shot and see what happens. The United States is my country and we suffered in nearly every facet at the hands of Bush. If Obama succeeds we all succeed, hence I wish him only the best and greatest success.

I just got back from the Inauguration, and one thing that slightly irritated me was when I passed a large banner placed against a wall that read “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED”. My friend, the mission’s barely been implemented. Don’t think you can just wash your hands like everything is taken care of. Now is when the real work begins. However, I can understand their enthusiasm for the first black president, but during these trying times, I hope he’ll be an accomplisher rather than simply an accomplishment.
January 21st, 2009 at 12:31 am
Hahaha – one of the newspapers here (Netherlands) this morning had the front-page headline: “The Black Jesus Has Landed”, with a huge whole-page image of Obama-as-Christ descending from the Heavens. Absolutely fantastic.

If the bastard abuses me or my children in any way I’m leaving the SOB…I don’t give a damn what the bible says. I don’t need a book or a man standing behind a wooden box to tell me whether or not I can leave an abusive situation….I have a brain to make that decision.

Ugh…”
But but but… they have the same middle initial!
