Looking for a 2009 calendar that is really beautiful, and helps out astronomy, and maybe has some text by me in it? Look no more! The Planetary Society has put together just such a calendar (and here’s the direct link to order it). It has lots of pretty pictures with explanations, and on the Fomalhaut month some of the copy was written by me. Part of the proceeds go to TPS, which uses the funds to educate people and promote scientific space exploration. Everyone wins!
So stop lingering here and go buy one. Go! If you buy one, leave a comment so Emily knows how much love we here at BA can send her.

$30?
You’re kidding, right?

As it says in the article, the money goes to The Planetary Society, a non profit organization trying to do good things.
But thanks for raining on my parade of trying to promote something I believe in being done by someone I support.

Let me up the ante for Mobility here by asking: why haven’t you joined TPS yet? I’ve been a member on and off for years — as have folks from more than 125 countries. The group makes invaluable contributions to science understanding and keeps hundreds of thousands of folks updated on what’s happening in the world of space exploration. I’ve always felt that TPS pays forward to future generations by exciting current generations about the future of exploration.

Wow, it is beautiful!
I’d pay $30 for this…and I live in a country where the average income is $200 a month.

Just ordered, thanks for sharing. Been enjoying your blog these last couple weeks.

with some of me in it
Curse my gutterbumbermind….
It’s still awesome, though, and well worth it to help The Planetary Society. I don’t always agree with their specific goals, but we need a pro-space lobby or else nobody’s goals will become reality.

I would LOVE one of those calenders but as I am in Canada, with the exchange and shipping it works out to C$45. Which is crazy to pay for a calender in January. Arn’t all calenders supposed to be 50% off in January? I love the Planetary Society but $45 is too steep.

Phil! Dude! Please take off one day a week. I have all I can do to READ your postings, let alone give thoughtful, insightful, hilarious ripostes,,,

Yeah, I typically don’t buy calendars, much less spend $30 on one. But I would definitely donate $30 to an organization like the Planetary Society, so it’s like doing something good and getting a free calendar for it.
Done.

I think they only get $7 from the purchase of each calender (according to Emily’s PS blog).
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:10 am
Sorry, $11 of the cost goes to the Planetary Society, not $7 as I blurted out above.

Off topic but I just took delivery of this month’s Sky at Night Magazine and not only is there a 5 star review of Death From The Skies AND a great interview with Dr Plait ( his big cheesy grin smiling out at me from the back page ) Good Job Phil! VERY COOL.

I’m not completely sure if to buy this or not, really really want to…
I don’t understand, $11 goes to planetary society, another 19 just goes to cafepress for? The actual printing? So, $19 is the production price, with $11 donation?

Naked Bunny and I must have the same level of depraved minds. I don’t know if I should be frightened of flattered!
And as ccpeterson, why not go an join TPS. I too have been a member on an off for years and years.

I am sure the ~$19 production price also includes some profit for the Cafe Press. Don’t get me wrong, I am sure the calender is fab and I love TPS and Emily’s work in general, I just think that $45CAD is a bit rich. I bought one of their calenders last year and it was great but I seem to recall paying less. Maybe that was when the Canadian dollar was worth $1.10 US. Ah, the good old days……..

Thanks for the love, Phil! I also want to send some love to Eric Hartwell, who generously donated his personal time to lay out the calendar and work with me to make sure the captions were informative enough that they would benefit his kids’ science class. He said his 9th grader was recently shown a “documentary” about the Moon Hoax in “science class” — as he said “they need all the help they can get!” So consider making this a double donation — purchase one to help out the Society, then donate it to your local school to encourage fact-based learning about the solar system!
Yes, $11 goes to the Society; $19 is the base Cafe Press price. Sorry it’s so expensive in Canada. The January photo is one of Earth so you don’t miss any space stuff by missing January

Oh, Oscar Wilde. Is there nothing you cannot wittily skewer?
January 22nd, 2009 at 12:36 pm
And we are skeptics, not cynics…

I actually hadn’t gotten around to getting an Astro calendar for my classroom. Barnes & Nobles were sold out when I stopped by so I had to settle for the Monty Python daily calendar (I quote from the “Holy Grail” all the time in class). But I just now bought one. Most of the other calendars were still running about $15 – 19 when I checked on Amazon the other night so I view it as getting a calendar and contributing to the Planetary Society.

Cool, I hadn’t got round to getting a calendar so far this year so this will do very nicely. Though I wish this had been available last year as I would have saved nearly a tenner with the then £/$ exchange rate
.

Um, yeah. I can’t afford/justify that much for a calendar that I’d forget to change after March, even a calendar as nice as that one. However, a $20 donation to a good cause, now that I can justify.
