I was amused the other day to get a message on Twitter that basically said the writer was surprised I was on Facebook.
Um. If I’m on Twitter, why be surprised that I use other social nets?
Still and all, there I am. I don’t use Facebook much, as I find it an irritating way to talk to people. MySpace is far, far worse, with a signal-to-noise that I swear is actually negative. But if you want to find me on the socnets, then here I am on twitter, here on Facebook, and here on MySpace. I don’t use any others; LinkedIn doesn’t suit my needs, and all FriendFeed seems to do is send me duplicate notices from Twitter and Facebook. If you have suggestions, I’m all ears, and I have a comment section below.
And if you’re looking for scientists on Twitter, ScienceBase listed 100 of them recently. Lots of good stuff there!

Hey, Phil! NASA video on YouTube, courtesy Slashdot.

Hey Phil, I have you on Facebook and I’ve seen a conversation take off everytime you post an update. Friendfeed is exactly like that, only the conversations and user-involvement are ten-fold at least! Oh, and it doesn’t have the social-networking overheads of Facebook..

I just like the idea that now I can refer to you as “an astronomer friend of mine”, even though we’ve never even met.

LOL, apparently [evil laughter] and [/evil laughter] in HTML is turned into some sort of HTML since it doesn’t show on my previous post. I guess I need to check with XKCD to see what that HTML command does?

How about AtheistNexus Phil?
That’s one where the signal to noise ratio is into tolerable levels, and may in fact bring in more interested parties if you’re a part of the community.

Um, Phil a minor ad issue. There’s an ad above your picture in the sidebar masquerading as a link window for Discover. It says “advertisement” on it, but it’s still misleading. It’s very anti-climatic to click on what I think is an interesting science article to be lead away from the site to buy something. Like I said, minor issue.

Larian: the HTML standard requires browsers to ignore tags they don’t recognize. Your tags are there, they just don’t have any effect.

So after posting this, I got 15 FB friend requests… all of which were men. Whu? Seems rather low odds!

Wouldn’t the signal:noise be less than one, not negative, since it’s a ratio? Unless somehow there’s negative signal that’s not noise. Or the joke went straight over my head.

Probably because of all your self admitted man-crushes. <3

Reading the title of this article I thought you were going to write about scientists who were twits. Now I get it though. Not that I’ll sign up for Twitter…its just more time spent on a computer that is better spent doing something more interesting, like observing the night sky at -30 C…the interesting part of that is not getting yourself frozen to your scope…if it happens then you might deserve the name “Scientwitt”. :-> Or Sciensicle???

The BA Says: “I don’t use any others; LinkedIn doesn’t suit my needs”
LinkedIn is like Facebook only for people who actually have jobs…

Thanks for the link Phil, your twitter link is now activated on my Scientwists list. Any other science types on twitter should retweet the link, DM me or otherwise express an interest and I’ll add you to the list. It’s fast approaching 200 and I may stop when it reaches that magic number

You have to check Friendfeed Rooms, for example: http://friendfeed.com/rooms/astronomy You can also search for more rooms, like this search fro science: http://friendfeed.com/rooms/search?q=science
I’m subscribed to you in both Twitter and Friendfeed.
